Kanye 'New Slaves'

Kanye 'New Slaves', Rapper Kanye West is always eager to grab attention in the most elaborate way possible. Now he's debuting a new song in the form of videos simultaneously displayed on the exterior walls of more than five dozen buildings — just in time for his May 18 performance gig on Saturday Night Live.

KanyeWest.com details where fans can watch the projection, which you can watch below in footage captured in Williamsburg, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York.

West recently turned Twitter into a guessing game when he posted a cryptic tweet: "June Eighteen," he wrote. The date could refer to the day his and pregnant Kim Kardashian's baby is due, or possibly the day West releases a new album.

If West does drop a new album on June 18, it would be his first solo album since 2010's critically acclaimed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

West's tweet about the projections is the only one on his account — he recently deleted the cryptic tweet we mentioned earlier, and the others last fall.

Nolan Ryan son

Nolan Ryan son, Reid Ryan choked back tears as he was introduced as president of his beloved Astros, the team he grew up watching in the days when his Hall of Fame father, Nolan Ryan, starred as a pitcher for Houston.

"My ties with the Astros go all the way back to 1980 when my dad came over," Reid Ryan said. "Today really is a dream come true because you grow up an Astros fan if you're in Houston. Everybody's got their hometown team, and the Astros were mine. This is just a very special day."

Astros owner Jim Crane certainly appreciates having the Ryan name associated with his team again, but was quick to point out that Reid Ryan is much more than simply the son of a famous ball player.

"It's great to have your kid in the business, but now he can prove himself as Reid Ryan," Crane said. "His dad's is a famed player, a very, very famous guy, but Reid's the kind of guy that stands on his own, and I think you'll see him stand alone in this position and do a great job."

Since 1998, Ryan, the eldest son of Nolan Ryan, has been the CEO of Ryan-Sanders Baseball, which owns the Triple-A Round Rock Express and Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks. The 41-year-old Reid Ryan helped create the Express, an affiliate of the Texas Rangers and the Hooks, an Astros' affiliate.

Don Sanders, who co-owns Ryan-Sanders Baseball with Nolan Ryan, raved about Reid Ryan. He pointed out the work he did in luring fans to see his teams, which have often been ranked at the top of the minor leagues in attendance. Reid Ryan also came up with the idea for the Rangers to play two exhibition games at the Alamodome in San Antonio in March that drew more than 75,000 fans.

"If I were going to buy a baseball team and I could have anybody in the country to run it, he'd be the guy," Sanders said. "He's just awfully good. I don't know that in this arena that anybody is any better."

Reid Ryan takes over a job where he will be tasked with helping increase attendance and win back disillusioned fans to a team that has finished with 100 losses in each of the last two seasons and has the worst record in the majors again this year. He acknowledged that Houston's problems are complex and that there's no way he could know how he will work to get things back on track on his first day.

But he did share a couple of keys that he will focus on.

"We have to put the fans first in everything we do and then we've got make sure we're taking care of the players, because it's all about the players," Reid Ryan said. "If you don't have the players, you're really not going to have anything."

While the team has been baseball's worst for the last couple years, Reid Ryan has been impressed with how the infusion of quality prospects from Houston's many recent trades has improved the organization's farm system.

"We had a stretch where we finished last five years in a row in Corpus Christi, and it was tough and we didn't have a lot of prospects," Reid Ryan said. "Then (general manager) Jeff (Luhnow) started making some of the hard decisions he made ... now there's a lot of talent, a lot more than I've seen in my time with the Astros."

His father played for the Astros from 1980-88 and spent four years beginning in 2004 as a special assistant to the general manager in Houston before joining the front office of the Texas Rangers. His famous dad and former Astros great Craig Biggio were on hand Friday for the announcement.

Though Nolan Ryan now works for Houston's in-state rival about 200 miles up the road, he still has a keen interest in the team he once played for.

"He grew up an Astros fan. I'm still an Astros fan. I follow them on a day-to-day basis," Nolan Ryan said. "I'm very connected to the team and very connected to what goes on here in Houston with the baseball climate. So that's a part of us and will always be a part of us."

Nolan Ryan said he hasn't shared any advice with his son about his new job, but he is very excited to see his son working for his former team.

"You're very proud when you see one of your children get an opportunity of this nature," Nolan Ryan said. "I'm very proud of the fact that our kids grew up in baseball and have a relationship with baseball and enjoy it and want to be associated with it. So that makes you feel good."

The younger Ryan takes over the position that was left vacant when George Postolos resigned on Monday.

Also on Friday, Crane announced that he had agreed to a letter of intent to buy the Hooks. The sale is pending MLB and Ryan-Sanders shareholders' approval. The Astros plan to assume control of operations of the Hooks at the end of the 2013 season.

China rains kill 55

China rains kill 55, Chinese authorities say rainstorms that battered southern China this week have killed 55 people and left 14 others missing.

The Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs website says at least nine provinces have had storms and some flooding and landslides since Tuesday. It says Guangdong province has been hit the hardest, with 36 deaths and 10 missing people, followed by Jiangxi province, where six people are reported dead and four more missing.

Guangdong's weather service forecasts more heavy rain along with thunder, strong wind gusts and hail in the coming days and warns of flooding and mudslides.

Showgirls dressed as Obama

Showgirls dressed as Obama, The Moroccan woman at the centre of a sex scandal involving former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi testified Friday in court for the first time, describing how a young woman attending one of Berlusconi's "bunga bunga" parties dressed up like a nun, danced provocatively and stripped down to her underwear for the premier.

Karima el-Mahroug took the witness stand in the trial of three former Berlusconi aides charged with recruiting her and other women for prostitution. They deny the charges. The trial is separate from the one in which Berlusconi is charged with paying for sex with a minor - el-Mahroug herself - and trying to cover it up.

El-Mahroug, also known as Ruby, has made carefully orchestrated statements to the media since the scandal broke but has never publicly given sworn testimony. Both she and Berlusconi deny having had sex.

The three Berlusconi aides - Emilio Fede, an executive in Berlusconi's media empire; Nicole Minetti, a former dental hygienist, showgirl and local politician, and talent agent Dario "Lele" Mora - are accused of recruiting women for prostitution at the parties and abetting prostitution, including of a minor.

El-Mahroug's testimony Friday confirmed the sexual atmosphere at Berlusconi's infamous "bunga bunga" parties, which were filled with beautiful young women. Many of those women have said they received money from the billionaire media mogul.

Dressed soberly with her hair pulled back, El-Mahroug said she first made contact with Berlusconi's inner circle when she participated in a beauty contest organized by Fede in Sicily when she was 16.

After that she made her way to Milan, hoping to find work. She said she tried to get work through another defendant's talent agency but wound up landing a job as a hostess in nightclubs, earning around 100 euros ($130) a night.

Eventually, she ran into Fede at a restaurant, where she reminded him of his promise in Sicily to help her. Shortly thereafter, she was invited to a dinner party - at Berlusconi's villa outside of Milan.

She testified that she met the premier that night - on Valentine's Day in 2010 - and that he gave her an envelope of 2,000 to 3,000 euros ($2,600 to $3,900) , saying it was "a little help" and asking for her telephone number, which she gave him.

At that party, she said, she introduced herself as Ruby and told other guests a fake tale that she was Egyptian, that her mother was a famous Arab singer and that she was related to then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. She was 17 at the time but had passed herself off as being 24.

El-Mahroug confirmed Friday what other witnesses have testified previously: that at some of the soirees, young female party guests had dressed up like nuns and danced for Berlusconi and then stripped down to their underwear.

El-Mahroug said Minetti, one of the defendants, had dressed up like a nun at that Feb. 14 party and lifted her costume to show off her legs as she danced in Berlusconi's in-house disco, which was outfitted with a lap-dance pole. El-Mahroug demonstrated from her seat how Minetti had raised her hemline. She said Minetti eventually took off her costume and was in just her lingerie.

She said other girls dressed up as President Barack Obama and a Milan magistrate who is leading the prosecution against Berlusconi in the sex scandal.

"The girls who were dressed in costumes approached him in a sensual way as they danced. They raised their skirts," El-Mahroug testified. She added: "I never saw contact."

El-Mahroug said she visited Berlusconi's mansion, Arcore, a half-dozen times, and that each time she was given an envelope with money, always in 500 euro bills ($645 each). The second evening she went she said she was given around 2,000 euros.

Prosecutors in Berlusconi's separate trial have said El-Mahroug's testimony is unreliable and are relying on her sworn statements. The defence had initially called her as a witness, but then changed its strategy and didn't call her. That trial is nearing a verdict.

MTA crash: 60 injured

MTA crash: 60 injured, An MTA crash left more than people 60 injured after two trains in Connecticut collided on Friday, May 17. According to Fox News, the accident occurred around rush hour so both trains were filled with passengers. A total of seventy-two people were sent to the hospital after the accident but no one died which some say is an absolute miracle. Everyone is expected to be okay following the accident.

"The damage is absolutely staggering. I feel that we are fortunate that even more injuries were not the result of this very tragic and unfortunate accident," said U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal.

The MTA crash left over 60 injured but many say that there could have been a lot more injuries and things could have been much worse. The trains collided with such force that glass shattered, train cars crushed, and even the actual track was mangled. The focus of the incident has shifted to the investigation as many want to find out exactly what happened and, perhaps more importantly, why.

"Our mission is to understand not just what happened but why it happened and determine ways of preventing it from happening again," said NTSB board member Earl Weener.

The MTA crash left over 60 injured but with 700 passengers on board, things really could have been much worse. Getting things up and running smoothly again is a priority this weekend but it is a slow process.

Miley Cyrus swatted

Miley Cyrus swatted, The swatting never ends! On May 17, LAPD were called to Miley’s house to find that there was actually no real emergency. Swatters seem to be picking on the 20-year-old singer — it was the second time she’s been pranked in less than a year!

Swatters must be beginning to run out of celebrities to prank, because on May 17 a pranker swatted Miley Cyrus’ house for the second time.

The LAPD received a call at about 8:55 PM from a female who claimed to be calling from a closet and reporting shots fired in her home, according to TMZ.

But of course upon arrival, the police were quickly able to determine that it was just the latest instance of swatting. Reportedly, Miley was not even home!

The “Party In The USA” singer now has the honorable (but not really) distinction of being one of the few celebrities to be swatted multiple times. She was the victim of a swatting prank in August 2012, when someone called 911 reporting a home invasion.

Miley revealed that at the time she thought it was all part of an episode of Punk’d. It appears that last night though, she wasn’t even bothered.

Bunga bunga parties

Bunga bunga parties, She is the Moroccan woman at the centre of a sex scandal involving former Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi.

In court, Karima el-Mahroug testified for the first time describing Berlusconi’s so-called ‘Bunga Bunga’ parties. She said a young woman danced while dressed as a Catholic nun and then stripped for the then Prime Minister.

But today’s trial is separate from one in which the 76-year-old is charged with paying for sex with an underage prostitute and covering it up, which he denies.

Away from the media mogul, the trial focused on three of his former aides charged with soliciting Ruby and other women for prostitution.

Nicole Minetti, former show girl turned politician, Italian talent agent Lele Mora and former news programme director, Emilio Fede, the third defendant. All three deny the charges.

Both Berlusconi and Ms el-Mahroug known as ‘Ruby the heart stealer’ deny having had sex. She admits receiving 7,000 euros after a party but claims it was merely a gift.

Kim k. swollen feet

Kim k. swollen feet, Kim Kardashian has reportedly sent out baby shower invitations, furthering rumors that this July she and rapper-boyfriend Kanye West are expecting a baby girl.

The reality TV starlet, 31, is said to have sent out invites for the June 2 bash in music boxes that play West's song "Hey Mama" when opened. There's also a wind-up ballerina twirling to the song the rapper wrote for his late mother, according to E! News.

If this story is to be believed, it's safe to say that the couple is likely expecting a girl, which had previously only been rumored.

And this kid is likely to be musically inclined from the get-go: TMZ reports that Kardashian has plans to bring their child along when West kicks off his concert tour in October.

"The touring company has already been given orders to arrange for cribs and soundproof hotel rooms at every stop," TMZ said. Us Weekly reported that a source said that "this was always the plan."

It seems a bit odd that the first-time mom would be willing to pack up and go along with West, but she's already traveled quite a bit during her pregnancy for both work and her relationship.

West and Kardashian have been dating since April 2012 but have been friends for even longer. Kim's younger sister Khloe Kardashian Odom recently revealed that she'd been trying to set them up since 2004. The couple announced in December that Kardashian was with child, just a few months before she reached a divorce deal in her short-lived marriage to ex-husband Kris Humphries.

The closely scrutinized "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star has dealt with even more criticism since becoming pregnant, with detractors commenting on supposedly excessive weight gain and simply impractical wardrobe choices. Obviously, her feet have gotten the "I'm pregnant" memo, but Kardashian's brain has yet to catch up, as she still insists on forcing her swollen limbs into strappy heels.

Bashing aside, Kardashian recently received from fan support from British singer and "X Factor" mentor Cheryl Cole.Hi Gorgeous lady! Just wanted to send you a tweet to say I think you are an incredibly beautiful woman inside and out," Cole tweeted Thursday. "I can only imagine how tough it is to be heavily pregnant and feeling extremely vulnerable on top of some of the daily criticism you take! I admire your tenacity and send you my best wishes with the rest of your pregnancy #enjoyyourblessing x"

The supportive tweet prompted Kardashian to give a gushy public response.

"your message really touched me! Thank you so much for the support & positivity! Its so important for women to feel confident & at peace during this amazing time! Your sweet tweet really made me smile!" she wrote.

It's been a rough few weeks for Kardashian and West. Last week, West walked into a street sign. Earlier this week, his Lamborghini was hit by Kardashian's driveway gate, he went on a rant against his celebrity status during a concert, and Kardashian also said that she almost got into a car accident with a paparazzo.

"A paparazzi almost crashed into my car today! I am still shaking! He put me in such danger! When will this legalized stalking stop???!!!???" she tweeted.

With Kid Kardashian on the way, we're thinking not any time soon.

Scarlett Johansson director

Scarlett Johansson director, The path from actor to director is a well documented one (with varying degrees of success) and Scarlett Johanson is about to undertake it with an adaptation of Truman Capote's posthumously discovered debut novel, Summer Crossing.

The film will tell the story of a 17-year-old Protestant debutante who begins an affair with a Jewish parking-lot attendant while her family vacations in Paris during the summer of 1945. Obviously, a controversial story and one that will be difficult to adapt, but Johansson is confident in the success of the project, which is currently being pitched to potential investors at Cannes.

"Several years ago I began working alongside the Capote estate and writer Tristine Skyler to adapt Summer Crossing, an inspired early work of Truman's which has long captured my heart," said Johansson in a statement. "Being able to bring this story to the screen as my full-length directorial debut is a life dream and deep privilege."

Johansson might be taking her cues from celebrities like James Franco, whose trailer for his sophomore directorial work As I Lay Dying, a Faulkner adaptation, recently hit the web. Capote himself was far from proud of Summer Crossing during his lifetime, calling the work “thin, clever, unfelt”. Though the novel definitely works in terms of style - it’s easy to see how Johansson could make a solid film out of it.

Hefner Wife $5 Million Home

Hefner Wife $5 Million Home, When it eventually comes time for Hugh Hefner to leave us for that big Playboy Mansion in the sky, his new bride won’t have to worry about where she’ll end up.

The 87-year-old mogul has bought his wife, 27-year-old former Playboy Playmate Crystal Harris a stunning 6,000-square-foot pad off Hollywood’s Sunset Strip for nearly $5 million, according to real estate website Redfin. The two married in December.

The property was purchased for exactly $4.995 million by a joint trust under the name “HMCH,CRYSTAL 2013 TRUST.” That means that, despite the fact that Harris reportedly hasn’t been put in Hef’s will, she’ll be able to live in the home after he dies, since she’s an owner.

Speaking of owners, the previous one, according to Redfin, is video game producer and Internet entrepreneur Jason Rubin, who bought the plot of land for $710,000 back in 2004 and had the house custom built. How much Rubin spent on building the house is unknown, and the listing agent did not return omg!’s call for comment.

The modern architectural house includes four bedrooms and five bathrooms, sits on more than a half acre, and has a glass wall in the living room that opens up completely to the yard.

According to the listing, the home features plenty of luxurious amenities like a glass infinity pool and spa, a home theater (Hef loves his movies!) that opens to a game and entertainment area, walnut floors, and a custom kitchen by the high-end Bontempi Group out of Italy.
Not that we imagine Harris as the cooking type (or eating type, for that matter), but, hey, you never know.

Hofstra student killed

Hofstra student killed, A Hofstra University student was shot dead Friday when an armed intruder burst into her home and held several students hostage until he was killed in a hail of police bullets.

Andrea Rebello, 21, was shot to death around 2:30 a.m. in the Long Island house where she lived with her identical twin Jessica — who emerged unscathed from the carnage, cops said.

The body of the suspect involved in a fatal shooting and break-in that occurred early Friday morning at an off-campus house near Hofstra University is removed from the house in Uniondale, N.Y.

Jessica Rebello, Andrea’s best friend and constant companion, was held hostage with her sister by an armed bandit until Nassau County police arrived and the gunfire started.

The twins’ father, after reuniting Friday with his surviving daughter, wept over his loss.High school yearbook photo of Andrea Rebello, a student at Hofstra University who was killed in her Uniondale, N.Y. home.

“It’s my daughter, my baby daughter,” a distraught Fernando Rebello told the Journal-News from the family’s Tarrytown home. “She was so beautiful. I’m so confused. I don’t know what to do.”

Police brass acknowledged that officers opened fire in the house, but couldn’t confirm who fired the bullets that killed the popular college student and the unidentified attacker.

Nella and Fernando Rebello, parents of Andrea Rebello, arrive at the Nassau County Medical Examiners Office.

Asked if the suspect fired his weapon, Capece said authorities wouldn’t comment “until we get more info.”
Jessica Rebello had transferred to the Long Island college because she missed her look-alike sibling. As investigators scoured the crime scene, their cars remained parked in the driveway — matching white Acuras.

People gather together in a Hofstra University parking lot, located near the scene of a fatal shooting.

“There’s just no words,” said Andrea’s devastated godmother several hours later outside the family home. “It’s just too tragic to talk.”
Andrea died about 10 minutes after the home invader burst through the front door at 213 California Ave. in Uniondale. He took the diminutive twins hostage along with Jessica’s boyfriend and a third woman, cops said.

Students grieve for slain Hofstra University junior Andrea Rebello in a parking lot on the school's campus Friday.

Neighbor Marcel Crandon, 43, who lives two doors down, said he heard a woman’s voice pleading for her life before four rapid gunshots.

To hear someone’s last scream of their life is something that you’re not going to forget,” he said. “It’s a scene that you don’t want to think about.”
All four people in the house were students at Hofstra, where Friday was the last day of exams.

The Rebello twins were both in their junior year, and shared the off-campus house with several of Andrea’s sorority sisters.
The assailant apparently ordered the third woman to go to a nearby ATM and make a cash withdrawal while he held her friends at gunpoint.

But she instead walked outside and dialed 911 to report the break-in and hostage situation, police said.
The terrified caller told the dispatcher the intruder was holding several hostages — and pressing a silver handgun against her friend’s head in a second-floor bedroom.
A neighbor reported hearing screams echoing from the rental property shortly before the first gunshots.

We heard the yelling and then five loud bangs,” said Victoria Dehel, 20, who lives five houses away. “It sounded like a college girl …. It sounded like she was fighting for her life.”

Dehel said a dozen police cars descended on the house around the same time as the terrifying scream. Cops ordered her and her boyfriend back inside their home when they tried to come outside. When the gunshots stopped, the gunman was dead along with the innocent student.

Katherine Parker, 27, who lives next-door, said she saw cops pouring through the back door of the house in the middle of the night. After the shots, I heard people yelling,” said the law student. “It was alarming.”

The twins had finished their exams earlier in the week and planned to stick around campus until after Sunday’s graduation, according to a friend.

Four people were in a house on California Ave. in Uniondale, L.I. when a man in a ski mask forced his way in about 2:30 a.m., Nassau police said.

Alexandra Berman, 21, said the twins and the boyfriend had just returned home shortly before the break-in. Berman said she was studying with the student dispatched to the ATM until about 2 a.m.
“I texted her (Friday) and said, ‘Oh, my God, I can’t believe this, I hope you’re OK,’ ” Berman said. “She texted back, ‘Thank you.’ ”

The killings rocked the Long Island campus just two days before graduation.
“A young member of the Hofstra family has been taken from us in a senseless act of violence,” Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz said in statement.

“Our hearts and minds and our thoughts and prayers are with her family, her friends and her classmates.”
The university announced its graduation ceremonies would proceed as scheduled, and ordered all flags on campus flown at half-staff.

Students shocked to hear about the violent death of the sorority sister.
“It’s stunning,” said one student. “I got out of my exam this morning, and my friend who lives nearby said he heard there was a shooting.”

Graduate student Bo Chen, 25, said he walked past the two-story suburban home every morning on his way to the library.

“This is a tragedy,” he said.
The residence sits alongside the Hofstra campus, and opposite the California Ave. Elementary School. Yellow crime scene tape blocked off the streets around the shooting scene.

The grammar school was shut down Friday as investigators flooded the crime scene. In the Rebello family’s neighborhood, residents expressed sympathy for the tightly knit Portuguese-American clan.
“They really did make a lot of sacrifices to do a lot for those kids,” said neighbor Jack Phelan. “They’re never going to get over this.”

Jason, who became the first openly gay professional athlete on a major American sports team when he came out in a Sports Illustrated piece last month, said he went over to Jarron's place to share the news.

"We don't have a serious tone to our conversations, and I was like, Jarron, I need to talk to you about something serious," said Jason, who played with the NBA's Washington Wizards last season.

Added Jarron, a retired professional basketball player: "He was very direct about it. He said, 'Jarron, I'm gay.' And I heard it, but I didn't quite register it. And I went about asking some of the dumbest questions you could possibly ask to someone who just told you that they're gay."

Quipped Jason, "Yeah, like, 'Are you sure?'" Since Jason's revelation, he has earned praise from many celebrities and fellow athletes, including Ellen DeGeneres, Neil Patrick Harris, Dwayne Johnson, Katy Perry, Rosie O'Donnell, Kobe Bryant, Andy Roddick and Bill Clinton.

George hill concussion

George hill concussion, Iman Shumpert insisted he had “no complaints” about how his swollen surgically repaired left knee responded Tuesday night.

But how else to explain perhaps the Knicks’ most effective and dynamic two-way player throughout the playoffs having zero points and zero impact in the Knicks’ 93-82 Game 4 loss to the Pacers?

“The knee’s fine. It felt fine. I had no complaints,” said Shumpert, who played just 16 minutes after averaging 35 over his previous six playoff appearances. “If Coach (Mike Woodson) was precautionary, that’s up to him. I just go out there and play when he calls my name.”

Shumpert, who wore a sizable ice wrap on his knee whenever he was out of the game, surprisingly was in the starting lineup. After sitting out practice Monday because he experienced swelling in the knee after Game 3, Shumpert remained at the team hotel Tuesday morning instead of participating in the morning shootaround.

Woodson admitted that he was “concerned,” while revealing that the Knicks’ orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Answorth Allen, flew to Indianapolis to examine the second-year swingman.

After an MRI revealed no structural damage, Dr. Allen watched Shumpert go through warmups before clearing him to play. Shumpert, who didn’t return until January following reconstructive surgery last May, reinjured his knee when landing awkwardly after being fouled by Indiana’s George Hill in the second half of Saturday’s Game 3 loss.

“It didn’t have nothing to do with (the ACL),” Shumpert said. “We were just making sure, just safe precaution. I was fine mentally. They just wanted to make sure it was clear.”

Still, Shumpert missed all six of his shot attempts in Game 4, including five from three-point range, and he played just two minutes in the fourth quarter.

“I wish I could’ve got shots up the two days in-between the games. But I was taking time off to get my knee some rest, and that affected that,” Shumpert said. “I didn’t feel rusty... Those are shots I know I can make and I will continue to take them.”

Shumpert started at small forward instead of shooting guard as Woodson went with a bigger lineup, inserting Kenyon Martin and benching Pablo Prigioni, who played just 3:26. With Shumpert’s playing time limited, Chris Copeland logged nearly 12 minutes and scored six points, but Jason Kidd was held scoreless for the eighth consecutive game over 15:46.

“I decided to play (Shumpert) under 20 (minutes) and it had nothing to do with anything,” Woodson said. “I think we played enough guys, but we just didn’t get it done.”

Milwaukee Bra Ban

Milwaukee Bra Ban,  A historic Milwaukee bowling alley and bar almost went without the appropriate support after a city inspector decided dozens of bras hanging from its ceiling were a fire hazard.

Holler House owner Marcy Skowronski said she and some of her friends started the tradition 45 years ago, when they had a few drinks and threw their bras onto skis hanging from the bar's ceiling.

They've amassed dozens of all sizes and colors over the years, even replacing old bras with new ones at the bar's 100th anniversary five years ago. Many times people sign and date the bras or leave notes on them.

But an inspector that visited in April apparently wasn't as accepting of the tradition. She said the bras were a fire hazard and Skowronski needed to take them down.

"They've been hanging there for 45 years," Skowronski said Friday. "I had inspectors here for 45 years. Every year they come and nobody's said anything."

The 87-year-old great-grandmother, who has worked at the bar for 59 years, went to the city Tuesday to appeal but missed the deadline. So her son-in-law took the bras down for fear they would get a fine, which according to the official inspection order can run from $150 to $10,000 a day.

Taking the bras down made Skowronski even more frustrated. She called a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel columnist, hoping publicity would help, and her alderman, Bob Donovan. Donovan made some calls, and within a day the city backed down.

"Long story short, common sense prevailed and the city backed down," Donovan said.

"We're going to have a rehang the bras party over there and perhaps charge at the door," he added. "And any money we are able to bring in, the proceeds will go to buying a little common sense for the Department of Neighborhood Services."

Besides the bras, the bar started by Skowronski's in-laws in 1908 is also known for its two downstairs bowling alleys, which are the oldest certified in America according to its sign.

Rihanna sues $5 million

Rihanna sues $5 million, We hope this doesn’t get ugly! A new report claims that the superstar is suing the British label for using her image on shirts without her approval.

Although the songstress has sported Topshop looks in the past I think it’s safe to say the days of her wearing the retailer are definitely over. Page Six is reporting that Rihanna is suing the mass brand for $5 million worth of damages for continuing to sell a graphic t-shirt that depicts an image of the superstar that wasn’t approved by her team. Additionally, the star isn’t making any royalties of the product even though it features her face.

Rihanna Sues Topshop:

The report claims that RiRi’s team has been trying to negotiate with the British brand for almost a year — but apparently they don’t seem too concerned with Rihanna’s argument. Not only have they dismissed the complaints from her team, but they offered up a mere $5,000. The graphic tee is currently sold in Topshop’s UK locations.

The source says: “What is most offensive for Rihanna is that they basically told her, ‘Go to hell. We don’t care; we are going to continue selling you.’ Topshop is now in the United States. They set up in Manhattan and Nordstrom, but they know better than to do this in the US because they would get in trouble.”

While it seems like a closed case in Rihanna’s favor, the reason the retailer is able to sell the shirts without offering up royalties is due to a loophole in the creative copyright laws in the UK. “Rihanna’s management asked Topshop a number of times to stop selling her image and were told, ‘We do what we want.’ They buy the pictures from a photographer, but they do not pay the artist licensing fees. Unfortunately, UK law does not protect the artist,” a source told Page Six.

Rihanna may not be wearing Topshop anytime soon but she will continue to show off her own line for British retailer River Island. In fact, the Summer 2013 collection is full of, (approved!), images of the songstress and her closest pals.

Ex-NBA player stabbed

Ex-NBA player stabbed, Serbian police say Predrag Danilovic, who played for the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks, is seriously injured after being stabbed in a fight.

Police say Danilovic was hurt during a brawl early Saturday in a cafe in a residential part of the capital, Belgrade. Doctors say Danilovic underwent an operation to treat injuries to his abdomen, head and arms.

The reason for the brawl was not immediately known. Danilovic is currently the general manager of Serbian basketball club Partizan Belgrade.

Sherri shepherd diabetes

Sherri shepherd diabetes, Kale and cauliflower don't exactly inspire big laughs – unless you're talking to Sherri Shepherd.

"If you had told me a few years ago that I'd be liking kale, I'd have laughed you out of the room," she said during a recent phone interview, her voice rising with vigor. "Freaking kale? Let's face it, when you break up with someone, you do not want a bowl of asparagus. I've never heard anybody say, 'I'm so depressed, can you give me a plate of asparagus and broccoli?'"

But as she describes in her new book, "Plan D: How to Lose Weight and Beat Diabetes (Even if You Don't Have It)," getting acquainted with those veggies became necessary. Shepherd, a comedian and co-host of ABC's "The View," was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2007. The formal diagnosis came after years of ignoring doctors' warnings that she was prediabetic – a wakeup call that led to her current pro-veggie mindset: "The other night, my husband sautéed the kale in olive oil with green, red and yellow peppers," she said. "And it was good! So now I'm a kale addict. I always challenge people to do things that are a little bit different with their veggies."

Shepherd, 46, who's 5 foot 1 and weighs 157 pounds – down from 197 several years ago – originally needed three medications to control her diabetes. Now, she's learned to control her blood sugar with a healthy diet and regular exercise. She spoke with U.S. News about how she reached that point, as well as her advice to others. Her responses have been edited.

You knew you had prediabetes, but for a long time, you weren't worried. Why?

I ignored it for years because mostly everyone in my family had diabetes. My mom passed away from complications at 41. But there wasn't really an urgency to change anything because we called it 'the sugar' – we didn't call it diabetes. And when you have a term called 'the sugar,' it sounds kind of cute. So for years, I ate, because that's what I was taught: If something was going wrong in your life, there was a peach cobbler to fix it. Even when my mom passed away, it didn't stop me from eating. I ate more. And then I started getting these signs, like my feet and toes were numb, I was always going to the bathroom, my vision got blurry and I was really thirsty. But I ignored it. I kept thinking, if I don't talk about it or do anything, then it's going to go away. But it never did.

Tell me about that 'aha' moment, when you realized you needed to make a change.

When I finally went to the doctor and got the formal diagnosis, they gave me three different medications, and I went home and ate. First I went to IHOP, the pancake house, and had a big stack of pancakes, sausage and bacon. Then I made chicken pesto pasta – a bowl big enough to feed four people. My blood sugar spiked so high that I remember my head was on my chest, and I couldn't even hold it up because I was so tired. I had this vision of my son crying, clutching his teddy bear, trying to figure out where heaven was because that's where everyone said mommy was. That image made me put my head up and say, 'I don't want to do what my mother did to me,' which was leave me at an early age to fend for myself. And I realized, I gotta change my life. Because I don't want my son to be walking down the aisle with his wife one day, with a rose on the chair in honor of his mother.

What's your diet like these days?

I had oatmeal with walnuts and blueberries for breakfast this morning. And for a snack, I had some Greek yogurt with almonds and slices of apples. Now, for lunch, I'm having salmon with corn, mushrooms and tomatoes. I'm going to get a salad in there somewhere too, and another snack. And we'll have leftovers for dinner. My husband, Sal, made me curried cauliflower soup. He threw in a little steak, which was my treat for the week, and made a great kale salad with some feta cheese. People think that when they're prediabetic or diabetic, they're not going to be able to eat anything, but you can eat a lot.

How do you squeeze exercise into your daily routine?

I have to make my house a mini gym. If I'm doing laundry, I do lunges to the laundry room, and if my husband is cooking and I'm just sitting in the kitchen talking, I do push-ups against the counter top. When we go to the park with my son, we do side shuffles, lunges and races, and we climb up the monkey bars. If you look at him, he looks like he's having fun – and mommy looks like she's about to pass out.

I also jump rope. Try it for 60 seconds straight, and you'll feel like your heart is about to come out of your chest. It's a great form of cardio. There's always a jump rope in my suitcase when I travel because it's something you can do anywhere.

And I've learned other ways to incorporate exercise into my life. Like, not everyone can do "Dancing with the Stars," but you can turn on salsa music and dance with your partner, or husband or child. I dance with Sal and pretend he's this hunky Russian man.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck loves exercising, and she told me that it releases endorphins. I thought she said it releases orgasms, so to this day I'm searching. I'm on the dang elliptical searching for that orgasm. It has not happened yet.

What are your parting words of wisdom for others?

If you have diabetes, it's not a death sentence. And if you're prediabetic, don't sit in the dark and try to ignore it. So many people are paralyzed with fear, but knowledge is power. Once you know, then you can take charge and make slight changes to your diet, and add in some exercise. My book is fun because I like to laugh. I don't like a lot of medical jargon. You can laugh at my journey and all the crazy things I do, like going in the garbage and eating food – and I've done that. After I've thrown coffee grinds it, and at 2 a.m., when that Oreo cookie is calling my name. It's OK. You've got to be forgiving. Don't be paralyzed, and you can live an amazing life.

McDonalds streamlining menu

McDonalds streamlining menu, Engaged in a race to boost more traffic and same-store-sales than competitors, fast food chains have understandably gone the route of adding more menu items. Over the years those menus have become bloated. Bloomberg reporter Leslie Patton looks into whether that complexity in menus is now coming back to bite.

She reports that there are signs bellwether fast food giant McDonald's may trim down its menu of 145 choices. The Angus burgers, fruit & walnut salad, chicken selects and more may soon be heading to the chopping block.

"It's gotten to the point where the operation has kind of broken down and that's all a symptom of the complication of the menu," said Richard Adams, a San Diego-based restaurant franchisee consultant and former McDonald's store owner. "They can't make the food fast enough."

…A comprehensive menu isn't all that important to fast-food patrons, according to a study from Nation's Restaurant News and consultant WD Partners published last year. Survey respondents ranked menu variety below food quality, cleanliness, value and service in terms of important attributes for limited-service restaurants. The study's top-ranked fast-food hamburger chain, In-N-Out Burger, features one of the least complex menus.

… "Part of the reason why Chipotle (CMG) works so well is that it's simple," said Peter Saleh, a New York-based analyst at Telsey Advisory Group. "If they added four more items, it would screw up the entire process."

Bruce irvin suspended

Bruce irvin suspended, There was plenty going on in the NFL on Friday, and if you missed the pertinent Robert Griffin III, Rob Gronkowski and Bruce Irvin news, then read on for the roundup.

The Chicago Bears became the third team to sign all of their draft picks, inking first-round pick Kyle Long to a four-year deal with an option for a fifth. Long was the No. 20 pick, and getting him signed is just one fewer thing for him to have to worry about.

He'll miss the rest of Chicago's offseason minicamp programs due to Oregon's finals schedule and won't return until June 14, so this was probably something the two sides were motivated to get done.

During the 2013 NFL Draft, it was big news when Griffin III was walking around and even jumping during the Washington Redskins' draft-day festivities. His recovery from injury will be the biggest news through training camp, preseason and possibly the first couple weeks of the regular season. That's why it's important to note that RGIII has been throwing since April and is on-pace to start the season opener.

Irvin, the Seattle Seahawks defensive end, was suspended for four games on Friday. Irvin violated the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy. Given that Irvin immediately released an apology, it doesn't look like he's going to appeal the decision, either.

Field Gulls offered up some early analysis after the news broke:

Seattle starts the year on the road in Carolina, returns home to face the Niners and Jaguars, then heads to Houston to play the Texans. The Seahawks will now be without their two main defensive ends from 2012 in Chris Clemons (likely PUP) and Irvin. The off-season signings of Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett are looking good right now, and Ty Powell may become a factor early on in the year.

Also on Friday, free agent safety Charles Woodson said that he would be open to playing for the Detroit Lions, provided the money was right. Woodson is well on the wrong side of 30 and can't have many seasons left in him, so he's looking for the best deal he can get. Of course, it seems unlikely that the Lions would be the team to give him the deal he's after, but at least Woodson is making it known that he's willing.

Gronkowski took the NFL by storm, but he's had some very significant injury issues this past year. On Friday, the news that he may require surgery on his back came out. This comes right after the news that he might need a fourth surgery on his left forearm. His back issue is considered "minor," but it's still a troubling trend for someone who might be the NFL's top tight end.

$446 waitress tip

$446 waitress tip, If service with a smile results in a good tip, then Steak n’ Shake waitress CeCe Bruce is smiling from ear to ear.

Bruce, a waitress for the past two years at a Steak n’ Shake in Indianapolis, is $446 richer after a longtime customer left her a tip in that amount on a $5.97 order.

“My first reaction was, ‘Miss Jo, I’m not taking your money,’” Bruce, 31, told ABCNews.com.  “It was crazy.”
The customer, identified only as Miss Jo, eats at her local Steak n’ Shake at least once a week and was evidently feeling very generous when she came in for breakfast Wednesday morning.

“She asked me if she could leave me a ridiculously large tip, but I did not know that it was that large,” said Bruce, who described Miss Jo as a middle-aged woman – “my angel.”

“She didn’t even give me time to tell her, ‘Thank you,’ or anything,” Bruce said.  “When I went back to get my manager, she took off out the door.  I went outside and she said, ‘You’re going to take that money,’ and drove off.”
“I haven’t had the time to even express my gratitude to her,” she said.

What Bruce has had time to do is put the $446 tip to good use by paying her bills. I’ve already spent it,” said Bruce, who, in addition to her full-time waitress job, is a full-time student at Martin University studying psychology.

She is also already back at work at Steak n’ Shake, speaking to ABCNews.com in between serving customers.
As to her secret for delivering service good enough to warrant an approximately 7,000-percent tip, Bruce was humble in her own praise.

“I’m not exactly sure,” she said.  “I just try to have a nice personality.  I do my job to the best of my ability every day.”

Justin bieber monkey

Justin bieber monkey, The Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber will have to pay thousands of euros to an animal shelter caring for the pet monkey seized two months ago by German customs officials.

The customs office in Munich said Bieber has until midnight on Friday to contact them, otherwise Mally, the singer's capuchin monkey, would become "property of the state" and would be transferred to a permanent home at a zoo or animal park elsewhere in Germany.

Mally was seized by German customs on 28 March when Bieber, 19, failed to produce required vaccination and import papers after landing in Munich while on tour. It was quarantined and cared for at the city's animal shelter, where the manager, Karl Heinz Joachim, said Mally, now 20 weeks old, had fared well and gained weight.

The shelter has criticised Bieber for keeping such a young monkey as a pet, saying the animal should not have been taken away from its mother until it was a year old. Experts say capuchin monkeys also need to be kept in groups as they are very sociable animals.

"The best thing would be not to buy one at all, but if you do, buy five," said Joachim.

He said emails from Bieber's management to the shelter indicated the singer does not want the monkey anymore, but that the final decision would have to be made by German authorities.

"Our contact is the person that the monkey belongs to," said Munich customs spokesman Thomas Meister. "We've had contact with lots of people but none of them was an authorised representative."

Meister said the cost of care, food and vet visits at the Munich shelter amounted to several thousand euros.

"You can bet we are going to ask for that money back," he said.

American idol ratings

American idol ratings, The numbers are in on the American Idol season 12 finale, and it’s not a pretty picture. The Fox show saw a dip of more than 40 percent from the 2012 season closer, losing some 7 million viewers to come in at a 3.6 rating among adults 18-49. Total viewers equaled 14.3 million -- the first time a finale has not reached the 20-million mark since the show first aired in 2002.

What went wrong? You could place the blame on any number of factors: from viewer fatigue and a stale formula as the show closes its 12th year, the bad chemistry at the judges’ table, which brought in two feuding pop divas that barely glanced at each other, competition from NBC’s The Voice, which has also seen ratings decline in its fourth season, and a less than enthralling contestant pool clearly positioned to hoist two girls to the finish line.

Also impacting the show’s numbers: the fact that it shifted the finale up a week, putting it in direct competition with several highly buzzed about season finales -- and one series ender, NBC’s The Office.

But most damaging, where advertising revenue is concerned, is the show’s aging audience. Currently, the average Idol viewer is 51.2 years old, according to Brad Adgate, senior vice president of research at Horizon Media, who points out that a year prior, it was 50.3, and 47.3 the season before that. “The numbers are headed in the wrong direction,” says Adgate. Recognizing that Idol continues to be a top 5 show, he adds, “If the show got 10 million viewers and the median age was 32, I don’t think advertisers would mind that.

But it’s become your grandparents’ American Idol.”
That explains a lot about Thursday’s low rated finale show, which featured such duet partners as Frankie Valli and Aretha Franklin (via video) and seemed to lean on Idol alums, both finalists like Adam Lambert and Jennifer Hudson and four former and current judges -- Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson and Keith Urban. Other performers included the more current Jessie J, newcomer Emeli Sande and country trio The Band Perry.

But Adgate believes the biggest harm to Idol has been the spin-off series’, be it The X Factor, also on Fox, or The Voice. “What made Idol so special was its limited supply,” he says.  “And to its credit, Fox didn’t succumb to the financial pressures of running the show in the Fall. But to keep Simon Cowell happy, it created a spin-off series and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that once it came in, you started to see this significant downfall for Idol.

… In two years, Idol’s average audience has dropped by 10 million viewers, from 23.1 million viewers to 13.2 million.
Such a dramatic slide could precipitate hefty discounts on ads for next year’s show. This, after a 32 percent drop in rates -- to $432,000 for a 30-second spot during the season -- signals more potential bad news on the horizon along with the possibility of make goods in the form of bonus units or online video.

“Buyers are not going to be tripping over themselves like they had been about paying a premium ad rate for Idol,” says Adgate. “Sure, it’s a top 10 show this year, but with young viewers leaving en masse and next year’s judges up in the air…” Well, as with many past show grads -- season 12 winner Candice Glover and runner-up Kree Harrison now among them -- Idol brass might want to keep their expectations in check.

Ceo sues over firing

Ceo sues over firing, The former CEO of Tuesday Morning has filed a discrimination lawsuit against the discount retailer, saying she was fired just months after revealing she had breast cancer.

The lawsuit by Kathleen Mason follows a discrimination filing with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission this summer. Mason's lawyer, Rogge Dunn, says she was fired during a phone call last June, even though she had overseen the company's growth during her tenure.

Dunn has said that Mason informed the board of her cancer so they wouldn't be alarmed if she began losing her hair or growing gaunt as a result of treatment. But he has said the board's attitude toward her began to change soon after, with members contacting her subordinates directly. At one point when Mason was wearing a wig, Dunn said one board member made a sarcastic comment about how nice her hair looked.

Tuesday Morning Corp., which sells closeout housewares and home decor, stood by its ousting of Mason on Friday. The company said in a statement that Mason's allegations are "without merit" and that it intends to "vigorously contest" any allegation to the contrary.

In announcing her termination in June, the Dallas-based company had said it was time to transition to a new executive who would "guide the company through its next stage."

The company, which has about 850 stores across the country, had recently reported a wider quarterly loss with fewer customers visiting stores and spending less per visit.

The lawsuit was filed Thursday in Dallas County Court.

A 2010 interview with Mason, which was done by NBC 5 after she was named Texas Businesswoman of the Year, can be seen here.

Mariah carey lip sync american idol

Mariah carey lip sync american idol, Mariah Carey is known as one of the greatest singers of all time. She was hired this year, for a whopping $18 million, to judge other singers on "American Idol." So when she gave a performance on Thursday night's "Idol" finale that seemed more appropriate for another talent show, "RuPaul's Drag Race" — that is, she appeared to be lip-synching for her life — well, it was not a tour de force, dahling.

Mariah's performance, which was actually pre-taped the night before the finale, featured the diva "singing" a medley of her greatest hits, including "Hero," "Vision of Love," "We Belong Together," "Make it Happen," and "My All."

But did she really make it happen? Was she really giving her all? It seemed like Mariah's onstage wind-machine was more operational than her microphone this Thursday. You be the judge:A representative for Mariah exclusively told Entertainment Tonight: "No, She did not lip-synch! She sang 3x and even sang additional songs for fans in between [commercials]." A representative from Fox declined to comment. Many fans, however, are still giving Mariah the Minaj-style side-eye.

Amazingly, Mariah's arch nemesis, the one and only Nicki Minaj, who's been known blast Mariah on Twitter, hasn't tweeted a peep about her future ex-co-star's performance. But plenty of "Idol" viewers have done so, in a manner almost as colorful as Nicki's. Some amusing sample tweets:

"How is Mariah Carey going to lip-synch on a show about singing live? That's like the host of Intervention doing heroin during the show" - ‏@scott_thrill
‏"This just in...Mariah Carey and Milli Vanilli are recording an album together. Wow, was that a bad lip synch..." - @JimKlingel

"Mariah Carey lip synched on a show where she judged people who are not allowed to lip synch. So disappointing." - @entylawyer

Hmmm…maybe these three people could be the "American Idol" judges next year?
Do you think Mariah was just paying "Idol" lip service this Thursday? Or was she the victim of some bad, cobbled-together editing? Sound off in the comments section below.

Cannes jewel heist

It could have been the plot of a Hollywood blockbuster: a thief creeps into a Cannes hotel room after dark and effortlessly makes off with over $1m worth of jewels destined to be worn by stars on the red carpet of the film festival.
The massive jewellery theft in the early hours of Friday was quickly likened to a scene from Alfred Hitchcock's 1950s Riviera robbery thriller, To Catch a Thief, with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, where a mysterious cat burglar snatches the jewels of the rich and famous on the Côté d'Azur.

But stranger still was the fact that the robbery took place just as all flashbulbs and press packs were focusing on Thursday night's premiere of Sofia Coppola's new film the Bling Ring, based on the true story of a group of suburban Los Angeles teenagers who stole luxury goods, jewels and watches from the houses of the rich and famous out of a desire to possess their wardrobes and emulate their lifestyles.
A safe box containing more than £660,000 worth of jewellery by the exclusive Swiss jeweller and watchmaker Chopard was removed from the wall of a room at the Suite Novotel. The room was reserved for an employee of the firm, which has sponsored the festival for 16 years and leads the way in the fiercely competitive race to showcase precious stones on the throats of the most famous stars.
On Friday, police continued to interview the Chopard employee, reportedly an American, as well as hotel staff at the Suite Novotel, a grey, modern block situated near a police station and a 15-minute walk from the more luxurious hotels of the Croisette. They were also examining hotel surveillance cameras.
Commander Bernard Mascarelli, a judicial police spokesman in Nice, said he did not know the precise type of jewels taken or their exact value. "Numbers have been put forward that we're still trying to verify, but the figure of $1m ... we're in that range," he said.
"Apparently this [hotel guest] was someone who was targeted because it wasn't someone who had been seeking attention ... There must have been either an inside complicity, or people who were in contact with this person and knew that the person had jewels," he said.
"It seems pretty unlikely to us that it was just one person," Mascarelli said, referring to the perpetrators.
Chopard and the Novotel declined to comment on the heist. The Cannes film festival said only that the Palme d'Or award, 118 grams of yellow gold worth more than €20,000 which is awarded for the best film, was "safe". The trophy is designed and supplied by Chopard each year.
That the Cannes film festival would one day fall prey to a massive red-carpet jewel heist is not farfetched. True to the accepted wisdom that film-stars are a diamond's best friend, the Riviera gathering has become as much about jewellery and fashion product placement as cinema. Each year, millions of pounds worth of precious stones and haute couture gowns are concentrated on the city synonymous with palm-trees and bling.
An influx of hundreds of hairdressers clock up on average three miles of walking a day each as they rush back and forth to hairspray quiffs into shapes that best show off diamonds dangling from earlobes.
Chopard, has about 40 staff at the festival each year co-ordinating the showcasing of its jewellery on stars, in competition with other big industry names such as Bulgari. At the Oscars or at Cannes, pieces worth millions are lent to stars who feature prominently on fashion pages.
Since the Cannes festival began on Wednesday, Chopard had already showcased jewellery on actors such as Julianne Moore and models including Cara Delevingne and Georgia May Jagger. At the Oscars, stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet and Christina Hendricks have worn Chopard jewellery.
Caroline Scheufele, co-vice-president of Chopard, told the Evening Standard earlier this week that the firm prepares for Cannes by taking requests from actors and their stylists: "The Americans are so organised. They know what dress they're wearing months before and they tell us how their hair will be.
"The Europeans are much cooler about the whole thing. They don't have an entourage around them. Things can change at the last minute."
Despite fears for the poor bare collar-bones of famous stars, robbed of their diamonds for the weekend's premieres, the Cannes film festival continued uninterrupted on Friday.
It's not the first major robbery in Cannes. During last year's film festival the international Senegalese footballers, Souleymane Diawara and Mamadou Niang, had four luxury watches worth around £340,000 stolen from their villa on the outskirts of Cannes. In February this year, thieves in broad daylight robbed a shop on the Croisette and made off with 150 luxury watches estimated to be worth about £800,0000. In 2009, an armed gang stole several million pounds worth of jewels from a Cartier shop on the Croisette.
Chopard itself recorded around £6m worth of jewels stolen from its flagship Paris store in 2009 by a man in his 50s who casually walked in wearing a suit and Borsalino-style hat, passing himself off as a customer before pulling out a handgun. He was suspected to be part of an international gang known as the Pink Panthers. The stolen jewellery has never been recovered.

$6 bill, $446 tip

$6 bill, $446 tip, CeCe Bruce said she's known for years that it pays to be nice. But she never realized just how much it could pay off until this week, when one of her regular customers rewarded her with a huge tip.

A part-time student at Martin University in Indianapolis, Ind., Bruce has worked as a waitress at a local Steak 'n Shake restaurant for two years, according to NBC affiliate WTHR. Though she had received a few generous tips during that time, nothing had prepared her for the generosity of Miss Jo, a frequent patron of the restaurant.

When Bruce first picked up Miss Jo's credit card receipt Wednesday morning, she said she thought the tip was $46, which she told WTHR would have been surprising enough, given that the bill was just $5.97. But the tip was actually a jaw-dropping $446.

"When I looked again, I said 'Oh my gosh, Miss Jo, I'm not taking that!' And she said, 'Yes, you're taking it,' Bruce told WTHR.

Bruce's general manager Greer Gooley said the waitress is worth every penny of the massive tip.

“She stays late, comes in early. Whenever we need her, she's here. So she deserves it more than anyone,” Gooley told local station WISH. “It just lets servers know that you work hard and it does pay off. There are people out there that [if] you do your job people reward you for it.”

Bruce told WISH the money will go toward paying bills.

Miss Jo's generosity mirrors that of a select few customers who have surprised their servers with generous tips over the past few years.

In 2012, star Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning reportedly left a $200 tip for a bill that already had gratuity added. And last May, longtime Houston waiter Greg Rubar received a whopping $5,000 tip on a $26 bill after Rubar's customers learned he needed a new car.

Zach Galifianakis quits drinking

Zach Galifianakis quits drinking, Zach Galifianakis is now promoting the third and last “Hangover” movie but, if we’re to believe him, he really could no longer relate to any of the experiences on screen because he’s quit drinking.

Check out a segment of his interview with Conan O’Brien in the video below.

After Coco notes that Zach has lost some weight, he answers that he’s not drinking anymore. He even volunteers to tell the story of how he came to realize that he was boozing it up too much.

Hint: it’s not really what you expect, involving a walk home, too much whiskey, a Jaguar, two jock-types, and getting spit on in the face.

Zach and the other boys, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha, and Ken Jeong return for one final round of drunken crazy behavior in “Hangover III,” out in theaters on May 23.

Bobcats name change

Bobcats name change, The Charlotte Bobcats might be short on history, but they could revive the city's basketball past.

CBSSports.com reported Friday that the Bobcats are actively trying to change the franchise's name back to the Hornets. Charlotte's franchise bore the Hornets moniker for 14 seasons (1988-2002) until the team was moved to New Orleans.

NBA DRAFT: Four who could be top pick

The New Orleans Hornets elected to rename themselves the Pelicans this season.

The Charlotte Hornets went to the playoffs seven times, but the Bobcats have made just one postseason appearance in nine years.

NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver, who replaces Commissioner David Stern in February 2014, said in April that it would take at least 18 months after a request for a name change to be granted to Charlotte.

Bobcats owner Michael Jordan said in November that returning to the Hornets nickname was "definitely an interest down the road."

Amanda Knox ex

Amanda Knox ex, boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito said in a recent interview that he refused to implicate her during the murder trial.

Knox “told me that she thinks that I’m a kind of hero, but I don’t feel so. And I don’t need any kind of gratitude… I did it because I know it’s the truth. It’s the good thing to do. It’s the only way for me,” he told Today.com.

His parents originally suggested that he should implicate Knox to save himself.

Sollecito stressed that he and Knox are both innocent in the murder of Meredith Kercher in Italy. Both were acquitted but the Italian high court wants the country’s legal system to look at the case again.

“I’m innocent, and we got evidence of our innocence, so we will fight until the end without any worry,” Sollecito added.

He said that he has no doubt that he will be proven innocent again.

“It’s something like a very far-away thought in my mind. I already know that I’m innocent and we already have proved it. So for me, it’s kind of nonsense,” he said.

Knox’s book “Waiting to Be Heard” hit No. 5 on the Publishers Weekly on Friday, according to Seattle-based KOMONews.com.

Howard Stern mansion

Howard Stern mansion, First, he signed a deal to take a gig with SiriusXM radio that would pay him half a billion dollars, and then he went and picked up a multi-million-dollar second job as a judge on "America's Got Talent." So while a $52 million home may sound like a lot to you, it probably isn't to Howard Stern.

The shock jock has dropped that much on a mansion (and we mean mansion) in Palm Beach, Florida, according to the Palm Beach Daily News.

As per details provided by real estate website Trulia, the home sits on 3.25 waterfront acres and totals nearly 40,000 square feet (no that isn't a typo) of total living space, including a five-bedroom, 11-bath main house that totals 18,673 square feet, as well as a "smaller" structure, a beachfront pool, and formal gardens.

The previous owners – Martin Trust, the president of a New Hampshire-based investment firm, and his wife – purchased the land for less than $4.6 million in 1986 and had the manse custom built six years later. The property was never officially on the market and changed hands privately, making it the largest residential sale in Palm Beach this year. But it might not be by the end of the year.

A look at the Palm Beach Multiple Listing Service shows that there is currently a nine-bedroom waterfront home on the market for a whopping $74 million – in case you know anyone who might be interested in one-upping Stern.

Sadly, no interior photos of his new lair have surfaced yet, but from the looks of the aerial shot, there's plenty of privacy, something Stern seeks out when he's off the air. The 59-year-old – who has been married to animal activist and TV host Beth Ostrosky, 40, for more than four years – already owns two homes in New York: a luxury apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side and a mansion in the Hamptons.

Stern has talked often on his show over the years about eventually wanting to leave the cold Northeast winters behind and move to Florida, though considering he renewed his contract for another five years in 2010, he's committed to staying on until 2015. Though working from home in his own studio is always a possibility … there's clearly room for it.

Sheriffs sue over laws

Sheriffs sue over laws, A consortium of plaintiffs led by 54 of Colorado’s 62 elected county sheriffs filed a lawsuit in federal court against the state Friday in an effort to overturn two new gun control bills that are set to go into effect on July 1.

The plaintiffs have in their sights one law that effectively bans all firearm magazines, and one that requires a background check for every gun transfer when the gun will be in the possession of someone other than the owner for more than 72 hours.

“On one hand, I’m proud to be part of this historic case,” said Weld County Sheriff John Cooke, who spoke on behalf of 18 sheriffs who attended a press conference announcing the suit.

“But on the other hand, it saddens me that we have to be here at all,” he added. “It should never have gotten to this point in the first place.”

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said the laws are not only unconstitutional, but also confusing and unenforceable.

For example, the ban on magazines was discussed by its Democratic sponsors as applying only to those that hold more than 15 rounds, in response to mass-shooting incidents in Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn.

But the law also outlaws any magazine that can be easily converted to hold more than 15 rounds, which applies to practically all magazines with a removable base plate that can be replaced with an after-market extender.

After July 1, the owners of such magazines cannot sell them, loan them or give them away. In effect, it means that even if they give their weapon to someone else for safekeeping — or, in the case of one wheelchair-bound plaintiff who spoke Friday, to hold momentarily as he gets in and out of his chair — they will be breaking the law.

The background-check requirement is also unduly burdensome, the sheriffs say. Maketa gave as an example a neighbor of his who, under the new law, would have to perform a background check on his fiancé if he left his firearm with her when he deploys with the military.

Rob Kardashian weight loss

Rob Kardashian weight loss, Congressional Democrats have pounced on a nonpartisan government report showing the Department of Education this year is forecast to earn a record $51 billion profit off student borrowers, denouncing the Obama administration and urging for structural reforms.

Members of the House of Representatives including George Miller (D-Calif.), John Tierney (D-Mass.) and John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) cited news reports in The Huffington Post that highlighted the Tuesday estimate by the Congressional Budget Office, which showed that the Education Department was forecast to report higher earnings this year than Exxon Mobil and nearly as high as those of the four biggest U.S. banks by assets combined.

"We don't see students or their parents as profit centers, and we don't think it's an appropriate concept to be acting like a market-driven bank here," Tierney said.

Miller criticized a policy that is leading to "immense profit being extracted from students and families that are struggling."

The critical comments have alarmed policymakers in the Obama administration, who along with lawmakers are racing to avert a scheduled doubling of interest rates on some new federal student loans that is set to occur on July 1.

Miller said the CBO report “totally changed the conversation around here.” On Wednesday, the Republican National Committee tweeted a link to the HuffPost story to its more than 213,000 followers.

Tierney said the profit figure prompted him to meet with Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter and other agency officials to discuss the issue.

The House Education Committee on Thursday approved Republican-led legislation that would tie student loan interest rates to the U.S. government’s borrowing costs. Two Democrats voted for the bill. The full House is expected to vote on the measure soon, as rates on subsidized Stafford loans for future borrowers are scheduled to double to 6.8 percent.

Some Republican senators have introduced similar legislation, as has the White House. President Barack Obama’s plan, however, features lower rates than the House Republicans’ plan, though unlike the Republicans’ plan it does not cap interest rates in case the U.S. government’s borrowing costs rapidly increase.

The president's plan would expand a program signed into law by George W. Bush that would tie monthly repayments of federal student debt to borrowers’ income. That part of Obama’s proposal was not seriously pursued during the education committee meeting.

Leading Republican and Democratic bills do little for current borrowers, potentially worrying financial regulators. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, for example, has warned that the cumulative $1.1 trillion in outstanding debt carried by today’s borrowers may impede economic growth.

Most Democrats slammed the Republican bill during the education committee meeting. They claimed a report from the Congressional Research Service showed the Republican measure would lead to higher borrowing costs for students and their families than current law.

The CRS report, however, assumes that the U.S. government’s cost to borrow for a10-year term will more than double in three years.

Miller, who for years has tried to lower college borrowing costs for households, said policymakers need to revamp the federal student loan program. Roughly three-fourths of all federal student loan dollars disbursed this year carry interest rates of either 6.8 or 7.9 percent. A quarter of them carry 3.4 percent interest, according to Education Department budget documents.

The rates are fixed by Congress, though they have not been updated to reflect the present near-record low interest rate environment. For example, when Congress set the rates in 2007, the average new 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage could be had for about 6.3 percent, according to Freddie Mac, the government-backed mortgage financier. The average new 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage now carries a 3.5 percent interest rate.

The increasing gap between what students and families pay to finance a college education and what the U.S. government pays to borrow has led to record profits for the Treasury. The Huffington Post

Vince Young graduates

Vince Young graduates, Vince Young produced arguably the greatest performance in the history of college football on its biggest stage when he carried Texas to the BCS title in the 2006 Rose Bowl. But as spectacular as Young was in Pasadena against top-ranked USC, that day still won't feel quite as special as Friday morning when he is awarded his college degree from UT in the school's graduation ceremonies on campus.

"This will rank No. 1 because it is what I came to school for," Young told CBSSports.com Thursday after his workout session in the Longhorns weight room. "I came here to get an education, and to win a national championship. And now, I get to put that smile on my mom's face."

Young wouldn't even try to put a number on the amount of family and friends he'll have cheering him on Friday as he gets his degree in Youth and Community Studies. Among the family members Young rattled off on his list he expected to attend Friday's ceremony included his dad, who really never had been in the player's life before. Many folks who are close to Young and have gotten to know his family well over the years say they've never met the man before.

"It's gonna be pretty packed, I just know that," Young said smiling.

Young's name has been in the news a lot since he left UT for the NFL as the third overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, mostly linked to negative stories.

His NFL career got off to a good start: As a rookie for the Tennessee Titans, he won Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and even made the Pro Bowl, but then it seemed to be one shaky decision after another, many linked to a string of bad financial moves and off-field incidents. He was released by the Titans in 2010 and had subsequent short stints with the Eagles and Bills before being waived last August by Buffalo.

A bright NFL career fizzled and now is on life support. But back in Austin this year, Young's life appears to have settled. He is part-owner in an upscale steakhouse (Vince Young Steakhouse). He's married to his high school sweetheart, and the couple have a precocious 2-year-old son, Jordan. Young also took a full course load toward earning his degree while getting himself in shape, hoping an NFL team will call.

"I've been doing this 31 years and guys (who leave college without their degrees) always say they'll come back, but he had more of a plan," said Brian Davis, UT's associate athletics director for Academic Services. "He said, 'My mom and I talked. This is important to me. This is important to her. I need to finish this part of my life sooner than later if we can.' And he did finish his semester like he was coming back. You have guys that (when they're done playing college football) who just kind of mail it in. Guys that finish strong when they don't have to is an indication that they are very likely to return.

"I couldn't be more proud of him."

Young said he expects to shed more than a few tears Friday knowing the path he and his family have taken to get to this day in Austin.

"I'm about to be the first in my family to graduate," he said. "Just finishing what I started. That's why I'm trying to get back in the NFL. To finish what I started. That is the type of guy I am. I do work hard -- even when the times are good or bad. That's just how I was raised.

"My mom used to be strung out on drugs. The one thing she used to always be able to do, was be in the house to go to work the next morning. I don't know how she got up after she was doing the things she was doing, but she used to be right there making sure we were getting ready for school and she was going to work. I saw that.

"I tell her to this day, 'Ma, you're a strong woman.' She was coming in after being out all night and then she'd pick up my grandma after she did a graveyard shift, where she'd go in at 11 p.m. and be done at 7 a.m. And when (my mom) got cleaned up, that was something I always saw in my mom and my grandmother was that strength to take care of the family and do whatever they had to do. Just finish what you started. That's where I got my fire and my push and to be happy what life gives you."

When Young left for the NFL in 2006, he said he was around 30-plus credit hours short of his degree. Early on in his career with the Titans, Young came back to Austin in the off-season for a full semester of classes. And even that took a controversial twist, Davis recalled.

"I remember watching ESPN and hearing one of the guys sitting there criticizing Vince for being in school," Davis said. "He was saying that (Young) needs to be in Tennessee and getting his guys together doing off-season stuff. And I'm watching this, thinking, 'What a horrible message to everyone.' What (the commentator) didn't know was that we crafted a full-class schedule for Vince where he didn't have a class until Monday at night and he didn't have class on Fridays. He was flying back to Tennessee on Thursday night, working out with the guys all weekend, and then flying back Monday afternoon so he could be with the guys while also being a full-time student. Many guys are held hostage by their contracts that they have to stay with the team in the off-season and so they can never finish."

For many former college stars returning to campus and attending classes with kids a decade younger can be a humbling experience. Some of Young's former UT teammates, who came back to get their degrees, like (former starting defensive tackle) Rod Wright, acknowledge how trying those first few weeks can be. And none of them are as recognizable as Young or have so many stories attached to them -- good and bad -- like the old QB does. Heck, go into any restaurant or bar in Austin these days and there's a pretty good chance that if there's a picture of a Longhorn football player on the wall, it's Young in his No. 10 UT jersey.

That first semester when Young returned to school as a student, the attention for the former All-American quarterback was overwhelming, Davis said.

"When he got to class, everybody wanted his attention," he said. "Girls wanted pictures taken with him. Guys wanted autographs. So he basically announced to his psychology class, 'Look, I'll take pictures and sign whatever you want in the hallway or outside after the class, but this is the professor's class and we're gonna honor that and be students here and not interrupt.' He's always understood that part of it.

"Some of the recent public criticism -- and maybe it's not so recent -- that's been out there probably has required him to have a little more courage, and there's probably some humility that comes with that. But to me, that's the kind of guy he's always been. It's not that he's arrogant or cocky. He just has the confidence in what he can do."

Young said he was approaching graduation day like a gameday especially since he'll have so many people in the stands rooting for him. His plan on Friday: Be at the Longhorns football complex by 8 a.m. to get in a cardio workout before all of his family arrives to witness him graduate from the school he first enrolled in back in 2002. And, if this all isn't enough to make someone get reflective, on Saturday, Vince Young will turn 30.

"It's definitely been a learning experience," Young said. "I've learned, 'Don't let things distract you or define who you are -- even if you do make a mistake.' I'm one of those guys who kept pushing and pushing and pushing. Even if I'm not playing football, I wasn't going to let those mistakes that I did make, define me as a person. I'm 30 now with a wife and family. I'm in a whole other stage in my life now."

Steve Jobs widow

Steve Jobs widow, Marlene Castro knew the tall blonde woman only as Laurene, her mentor, whom she met every few weeks in a rough Silicon Valley neighbourhood the year she was applying to college. Without Laurene's help, Castro said, she might not have become the first person in her family to graduate from college.

It was only later, when she was a freshman at University of California, Berkeley, that Castro read a news article and realized that Laurene was Silicon Valley royalty, the wife of Apple's co-founder, Steven P Jobs.

"I just became 10 times more appreciative of her humility and how humble she was in working with us in East Palo Alto," Castro said.

The story, friends and colleagues say, is classic Laurene Powell Jobs. Famous because of her last name and fortune, she has always been private and publicity-averse. Her philanthropic work, especially on education causes like College Track, the college prep organization she helped found and through which she was Castro's mentor, has been her priority and focus.

Now, less than two years after Steve Jobs's death, Ms Powell Jobs is becoming somewhat less private. She has tiptoed into the public sphere, pushing her agenda in education as well as global conservation, nutrition and immigration policy. Last month, she sat down for a rare television interview, discussing the immigration bill before Congress. She has also taken on new issues, like gun control.

"She's been mourning for a year and was grieving for five years before that," said Larry Brilliant, president of the Skoll Global Threats Fund who is an old friend of Jobs's. "Her life was about her family and Steve, but she is now emerging as a potent force on the world stage, and this is only the beginning."
