The hobbit desolation of smaug, Smack dab in the middle of the summer superhero season comes this: a brand-new trailer and images for director Peter Jackson’s next Hobbit flick, The Desolation of Smaug.
It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about Jackson’s J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation (OK, since like December/January), so here at the mid-point between the release of An Unexpected Journey and Smaug we’re getting a little taste of what the next chapter will look like.
What’s here? First, and probably most interestingly, we have elf warrior Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly) in action. (She fires arrows! Somewhat accurately!) There’s also Azog (Manu Bennett) and Luke Evans as Bard the Bowman, among others.
However, what we can see here, but not hear here is Smaug himself. There’s a glimpse of the eponymous dragon at the end of the trailer but no sound from the (everywhere all the time) actor playing him: Benedict Cumberbatch. Not that audiences don’t already know what he sounds like—his “shall we begin?” from Star Trek Into Darkness is still booming through theaters—but of the things fans are anticipating in Smaug at the top of the list is, well, Smaug. Of course the big Cumberbatch reveal isn’t going to come with the first trailer, but it would’ve been nice.
This new trailer and images also trumpets the return of Orlando Bloom as Legolas, and quite a bit of the gang from the last Hobbit flick: Bilbo (Martin Freeman), who is apparently exercising every opportunity to frolic and look scared in this trailer, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), and Gandalf (Ian McKellen). And, overall, the trailer promises an action-packed ride, which would be a relief after An Unexpected Journey‘s, um, slower moments. Will it be better than its predecessor? Or will it just leave fans with their own desolation? We’ll have to wait and see.
