Ed Lucas Marlins

Ed Lucas Marlins, Making it to the major leagues regardless of background puts you in exclusive company. Recently promoted infielder Ed Lucas upon making his debut will join an even narrower group.

He will become the first Dartmouth product to appear in a big league game since Mike Remlinger in 2006. Stepping in the batters' box for the first time will make him just the 27th player ever from the New Hampshire Ivy League school to do so in the majors.

In addition, Lucas stands to become the just the fourth Ivy Leaguer to play in the big leagues this season. He would join Yale's Craig Breslow and Ryan Lavarnway, Penn's Mark DeRosa, and Princeton's Will Venable.

"There are a few of us bouncing around nowadays, more than there have been in the past I think," Lucas said.

Some Ivy Leaguers that appeared in the majors as recently as last season include pitchers Ross Ohlendorf and Chris Young (Princeton) with the Padres and Mets, respectively, and Frank Herrmann (Harvard) with the Indians.

A sociology and economics major at Dartmouth, Lucas, 31, is in his 10th professional season. He had never been called up before this week.
