Yobe school killings: Latest extremist attack leaves 42 dead

Yobe school killings: Latest extremist attack leaves 42 dead, There are 42 dead after Yobe school killings in Nigeria. The incident happened Saturday morning, reports The Independent on July 8. Islamic extremists are being blamed for the massacre, and all secondary schools in the region are closed for now.

The Yobe school killings mark the third school attack in the northeastern area of Nigeria over the past few months. Reports indicate that Boko Haram Islamists made students and teachers march into a dormitory, and then they threw bombs into the room. They also set the building on fire.

IRIN News reports that the 42 dead in the Yobe school killings include 41 students and one teacher. The Yobe State authorities are now keeping secondary schools in the region closed until September, as community leaders work to find better strategies to keep staff and students safe in the midst of area unrest.

In addition to the bombs and fire, a number of students were reportedly shot. Some students escaped into nearby brush with gunshot wounds, and several remain at the hospital receiving treatment. There were two other similar Boko Haram attacks at schools in the area in May.

Officials from Yobe State say that Boko Haram has burned down 205 schools there just in the past year. Sadly this Yobe school killing seems to be just the latest in a long line of attacks in the region, with little stopping the extremists responsible.
