Ken Griffey Jr. daughter, MLB great Ken Griffey Jr.'s daughter and a top 50 basketball prospect, Taryn Griffey, has signed with the University of Arizona after passing on many other top schools.
Some are surprised at her decisions because Arizona is known for its outstanding football and men's basketball squad, with women's team not being competitive for a few years.
Perhaps her choice to join the school has something to do with her brother Trey being a wide receiver on the school's football team.
"My family was pretty shocked. I hadn't said anything because I didn't really know what I was thinking," she told Central Florida News 13. "My brother is here and my dad and him were high fiving."
"My brother being out there had some influence on it, but I really like the coach and I really like the atmosphere out there," she said.
Another plausible reason for accepting Arizona could be along the lines of her father's competitive spirit, and her wanting to help build and improve a team that was 12-18 last season.
Griffey was named the Florida High School Athletic Association's Class 8A player of the year right before an ACL injury that sidelined her for her entire junior year.
She won three state championships in high school and ESPN ranked her as the 12th best point guard in the class of 2014.
Taryn comes from a baseball family where her grandfather, Ken Sr., and father, Ken Jr., played professionally at a high level on great teams.
Jr. has 630 career home runs and over 1,800 runs batted it. The home run total is good for fifth best of all time in a career that was cut short by at least three years due to injuries.
He was a 13x All-star, 10x Gold Glove winner, and 97 AL MVP.
