Bergeron Hospital, There is good news of sorts for Boston Bruins' captain Patrice Bergeron. He was discharged from hospital Saturday night and flew home with the team Sunday morning.
Bergeron was injured in the first period of Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks and played only a handful of seconds in the middle period before being taken to hospital with an undisclosed injury.
He took just two shifts in the second period and did not look comfortable on the ice or on the bench. His final shift was 16 seconds, as he skated off not long after setting up Jaromir Jagr for a shot.
Bergeron appeared to be in pain as he was bending over on the bench during the second period.
He was not on the bench for the start of the third period, and his absence forced coach Claude Julien to jumble his lines. It helped that rookie Carl Soderberg, who made his playoff debut Saturday night, can play centre.
Julien would not reveal how it happened or any other details. He did say Bergeron “may be in the next game,” but brushed aside further questions.
“Guys, I’m not going there, so anything else but injury here,” Julien said. “I’ll update you when I have an update. There’s nothing more. We can ask a million questions. I don’t have any more information than probably you guys do right now.”
Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews also appeared to suffer an injury. He was hit in the head by Bruins defenceman Johnny Boychuk in the second period, then did not take a shift in the third.
Bergeron's availability for Monday night's sixth game of the series remains in doubt. Chicago is up 3-2 in the best-of-seven Stanley Cup final and can clinch its second Stanley Cup in four years with a win in Boston.
