College hoops player dies

College hoops player dies, A Bentley University basketball player died after collapsing at a recreational summer league game at a Watertown playground, police said Tuesday.

Joe Glynn, 19, was pronounced dead at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge after collapsing at about 7:30 p.m. Monday, Lt. Michael Lawn said. The death remains under investigation but does not appear suspicious, Lawn said.

Glynn had no physical contact with any other player before collapsing, teammate Michael Crotty Jr. told the Boston Herald.

The 6-foot-5 forward from Abington averaged 3.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game as a freshman last season for the NCAA Division II Falcons. He started 16 games for Bentley, which finished 11-15.

''Our deepest sympathies go out to Joey's family, friends, classmates, teammates and professors as they struggle to comprehend the sudden loss of such a vibrant young life,'' Bentley President Gloria Larson said in a statement. The university will schedule a memorial service in the future.

Glynn was an All-Scholastic at Cardinal Spellman High School in Brockton, where he scored 1,425 career points. The high school held a prayer service for Glynn on Tuesday morning, and many of his classmates from the Class of 2012 attended, according to The Enterprise. He also was a standout football player at Spellman.

''He was an outstanding athlete and an even better person,'' Spellman spokesman Nate Merritt said. ''He always represented Spellman better than we could have even asked. Putting this tragedy into words is virtually impossible.''

Glynn is survived by his parents, Joseph and Susan Glynn, and four sisters.
