One-armed volleyball player

One-armed volleyball player, A high school volleyball player who returned to the court in May after cancer forced him to have his right arm amputated in October died early Tuesday, according to the New York Daily News.

Eduard Nogay, who attended Ft. Hamilton High School in Brooklyn and rejoined his team for a May 7 playoff win, had been at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan since May 19.

He died shortly after midnight, with his three best friends, family and volleyball coaches by his side, according to the paper.

“It was a beautiful but devastating moment,” Nogay's coach, Kim Tolve, told the Daily News.

Monday was Nogay’s 18th birthday, and a party had been planned for him at 7 p.m., but at around 6 p.m., Nogay began having trouble breathing.

The event was canceled as a result, but Nogay still had time to say goodbye to the 30 students who showed up before he passed.

“It was storybook,” Denis Dikarev, one of the three friends in the room at the time of Nogay's passing, told the Daily News. “After it hit 12 o’clock — he made a promise to his brother to wait until his birthday finishes. Right when it hit 12 o’clock, that’s when it happened. I really feel like he wanted it this way."

Born in Uzbekistan, Nogay came to the US in 1999, and a biopsy last year revealed that a lump by his right elbow — one previously thought to be benign — was a sarcoma. Neither radiation nor chemotherapy achieved the desired result, so the decision was made to amputate most of Nogay's arm on Halloween.

In April, Nogay had tubes inserted into his lungs after a second lung collapsed. Doctors didn't want him to return to the volleyball court, but he did, for a 2-1 win against Christopher Columbus High School.

“The two teams are in warmups and everybody’s looking for Eddie,” Tolve said at the time. “He kind of snuck into the school through the back entrance, and he comes walking into the gym with his uniform on, his kneepads on, a smile on his face and a letter in his hand. And that just got the guys all fired up. It was hard to hold back the tears.”
