Eminem turns 40, Years before Eminem was winning Grammys, bringing 8 Mile rap battles to the big screen and cleaning out his metaphorical closet, he was a student at Detroit's Lincoln High.
While Mathers' 1999 breakout single, "My Name Is," sees the rapper admitting, "My English teacher wanted to flunk me in junior high/Thank a lot, next semester I'll be 35," photographic evidence reveals he was still a fresh-faced teen when he hit 9th grade.
In honor of Em's 40th birthday today, we present his 1989 freshman yearbook picture, courtesy of Can you believe that bad boy has almost hit middle age? What am I talking about -- 40 is the new 30, especially if you're an aging maturing rapper.
Eminem has been through a lot in his 40 years -- some of it naughty, some of it nice, and a whole lot of it exciting. And he's still going strong. His successful 2010 album Recovery pretty much says it all. He's back in the studio now recording a new solo album. And he's the proud father of a (gulp!) teenage daughter, Hailie Jade Mathers. Here's a timeline of life's highs and lows in the career of Eminem.
Mid 1980s: Marshall's mom moves them to Detroit, where he spends his teens.
1995: Hailie Jade Mathers is born to Marshall's then-wife Kimberly Anne Scott. Kim and Marshall divorced, remarried, and divorced again.
1997: Eminem debuts his Slim Shady EP. A year later he signs with Aftermath Entertainment/Interscope Records and delivers his Slim Shady LP. It's highly acclaimed by critics and leads to collaborations with Dr. Dre. It's also criticized for a song encouraging a man to murder his wife and her lover.
2000: The Marshall Mathers LP becomes the fastest-selling album to that date.
2002: Eminem stars in the semi-autobiographical film 8 Mile.
2005: Eminem goes into rehab for his addiction to sleeping pills. After producing a string of hit records Eminem is rumored to be retiring. He releases a greatest hits album and later calls into a radio station to admit he's in limbo. His next album, Relapse, comes out in 2009.
