Alejandro Guerena fled to Hermosillo, Mexico, One of Pima County's most wanted is behind bars after authorities say he fled to Mexico.
Alejandro Guerena is the suspected leader of a drug ring and right now is sitting in a Pima County Jail Cell. His bond is set at a quarter of a million dollars. The big question: is that too little?
Pima County Sheriff's Deputies escorted Alejandro Guerena to jail Friday night. The suspected drug leader of a massive drug ring has been on the run for six months. He was one of Pima County's most wanted but his luck ran out.
"The relentless pursuit of him ultimately paid off," said sheriff's spokesman Tom Peine.
Guerena was captured in Hermasillo, in Northern Mexico. He faces drug trafficking and money laundering charges. His family has been on the radar for a few years.
Peine said, "In May 2011 search warrants were obtained for several residences controlled by the Guerena drug trafficking organization."
You may remember the SWAT raid around that same time. Alejandro's brother Jose Guerena was shot and killed. Three other relatives were also arrested on similar charges.
Meantime, Alejandro's bond is posted at $250,000. Lupita Shestko-Montiel, who works at a bail bonds agency says it doesn't seem right.
"That's a lot of money for someone to come up with," said Shestko-Montiel. "But it's very little compared to the 23 charges this person has."
She says people's bonds are determined on income, jobs and property. If Guerena wants to post bond, he has to come up with all of the money in cash. That's something Shestko-Montiel says is highly unlikely. But, if that is the case, the courts will investigate.
"They do a lot of questions," said Shestko-Montiel. "They also send dogs to sniff the money. If the money has any traces of drugs, it's seized."
