Planes collide in Arizona: Four dead in crash, Four people died Friday after two planes collided in the northern Phoenix, Ariz. area. AZ Central shared the details on May 31 of the accident that took place over a remote desert area around 10 a.m. Both planes were single-engine planes.

The planes collided about 15 miles northwest of Phoenix Deer Valley Airport along New River Road. There were two people in each aircraft, and all four people died. One plane was believed to be a Cessna, while the other was a Piper Archer III.

The Cessna caught fire upon impact and both the plane and passengers were said to be unrecognizable. The Piper landed mostly intact about 100 yards from the other plane, but the passengers still perished in the collision.

The Piper is owned by Bird Acquisition LLC which operates a local flight school named TransPac Aviation Academy. The Cessna is from Westwind School of Aeronautics. Though the identities of the four dead have not yet been released, AZ Central indicates that two of those killed after the planes collided were flight instructors. The cause of the plane collision is under investigation.
