Like West Virginia did during the Civil War, some Coloradans want out and insist it's no stunt.
The Colorado secede movement is catching steam. In fact, residents from neighboring states have joined the drive for secession, citing a July 12 UPI news report.
Proponents of the Colorado secession plan include Kit Carson, Weld, Sedgewic, Yuma, Morgan, Phillips, Logan, Lincoln and Cheyenne counties.
It all sounds like a strong-arm or symbolic gesture, at best; West Virginia was the last territory to form its own state through secession.
However, residents of the northern counties see this as a way that can protect the rural way of life by upholding gun control rights and seeing the economic boost to oil and gas production.
Not everyone is over the moon about a Colorado secede movement.
"I don't want be in a 51st state. I don't want any part of their fracking that they're doing in Weld County," said, Washington County resident, Steve Frey.
Additionally, many are fed up with the alleged partisan politics that serves as drivers behind the recent issues passed in the legislature.
Essentially, Democrats control the House and Senate are made up primarily of urban residents. Rural Coloradans contend that laws and bills focus on disenfranchising northerners and don't provide enough representation at the table.
As such, opponents of any North Colorado secession plan say it simply makes sense to map out the state in a manner that reflects representation by area not population.
Accordingly, it gives rural residents more of a voice.
At the end of the day, that's all they want.
