Royal baby due date: Prince William arrives at wife Kate Middleton's side as she prepares to give birth, Pilot Wills has left his base on Anglesey to be with Kate after taking leave from his job as an air-sea rescue helicopter captain
The father-to-be is now at the Duchess of Cambridge's side as they prepares for the arrival of their first baby.
Pilot Wills has left Anglesey to be with Kate after taking leave from his job as an air-sea rescue helicopter captain.
Royal pals and Clarence House have imposed total secrecy surrounding the birth of the baby, who will be third in line to the throne after Prince Charles and Prince William.
Today is thought to be the due date but if Kate does not go into labour, William will play in a charity polo match alongside Prince Harry tomorrow.
The royal brothers are long-time members of the host Cirencester Park Polo Club, which is 94 miles away from central London.
A royal source said: “The entire family are on tenterhooks. Above all though it’s a very exciting time for the couple and every effort has been made to make sure the birth goes smoothly.
“William is dedicated to his work but he was absolutely determined to make it, no matter the distance.
“It is a momentous time, not just for the Duke and Duchess as a couple welcoming their first child into the world, but for the future of the monarchy as a whole.”
Kate will give birth in the Lindo wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, Central London, where the couple are hoping for a natural birth.
It is the same place Diana Princess of Wales gave birth to William and brother Harry.
Obstetrician Marcus Setchell – who has been gynaecologist to the Queen since 1990 and delivered Sophie Wessex’s two children – will deliver the baby.
Dr Setchell, 70, had been due to retire but agreed to deliver her baby after treating her for extreme morning sickness in early pregnancy.
Kate had a difficult start to her pregnancy after spending three days in hospital for acute morning sickness.
However, she quickly regained her strength and has pressed on with her normal diary of official visits up until last month, when she took part in her final solo engagement by launching the Royal Princess cruise ship.
If Kate and Wills have a daughter she will be the first in modern history to become Queen by the right of being the first-born – historically, the first-born male automatically acceded to the crown.
Wills and Kate insist they don’t yet know what sex their baby is.
Once the future king or queen has been delivered, the new parents will ask private secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton to deliver the news to the Queen by telephone.
Senior royals including Prince Charles and Carole and Michael Middleton, who will all become grandparents for the first time, will also be informed.
When close relatives have learned of the news, millions of people around the globe will find out the royal baby has been born when an aide leaves the hospital clutching a formal announcement of the delivery.
However, the country will be kept waiting as to the sex, eye colour and weight of the tot while the notice, written on Foolscap-sized paper, is driven 2.5 miles to Buckingham Palace.
Once there, the announcement will be placed in a frame on the same easel used to declare the arrival of Prince William 32 years ago.
The easel will be put at the palace gates for all to see and officials are expecting huge crowds to gather in scenes of celebration reminiscent of when William was born.
Royal sources have confirmed the paper will include a brief description of the royal baby’s first moments with his or her parents.
For Prince William, he was said to have “cried lustily” when finally in the arms of mum Diana while his proud dad the Prince of Wales looked on.
When the traditional method of announcing the royal baby’s birth is done, Clarence House and Buckingham Palace officials will take to Twitter to send their news around the globe.
Although the baby’s name will be a mystery until his or her birth, palace officials have confirmed its title.
The child will be known as His/Her Royal Highness Prince/Princess (baby's name) of Cambridge.
