Mark Sanchez: 'Not a big deal' that Geno Smith skipped Jets West, On Friday, we delivered the hard-hitting news that Geno Smith wasn't appearing at Jets West, Mark Sanchez's voluntary, offseason training camp in California.
Well, we learned later in the evening that Sanchez doesn't think Smith's absence is -- *gasp* -- "a big deal."
"We invited everybody, we emailed everybody, we do it every year," Sanchez told the NFL Network from his training camp. "I sent out an email to everybody. Some guys got back quicker than the others, but everybody was invited. It's not a big deal that he is not here."
Of course it's not a big deal that Smith no-showed Jets West. It's the offseason. It's voluntary. It's run by his direct competition.
Smith and Sanchez don't have to be BFFs or, um, Fs. (That might not be how the kids do it.)
As noted on Friday and as confirmed by Sanchez, he was the only quarterback out there.
"We've had other quarterbacks; this is the first year we haven't had other quarterbacks," Sanchez said. "Greg McElroy's been here before, [Matt] Simms was here last year, Tim Tebow, who you might have heard of, has been here, Mark Brunell has been here, Kevin O'Connell has been here.
"If Geno comes or doesn't come, it is not a big deal. I don't hold it against anybody who's not here. Some guys are getting married, some guys are going on vacation, some guys are doing stuff, so it's totally optional. And it's a big sacrifice -- you got to leave your family, you got to leave what you're doing, wherever you're from. So I totally understand. It's not a big deal."
Maybe Sanchez didn't even want Smith there. Geno is, after all, Sanchez's competition, too. Regardless of whether the two guys like each other and regardless of whether or not Geno has a legitimate excuse for missing the camp (not that he needs ones), it's always nice to know we can count on the Jets for a little offseason drama.
