Urban meyer aaron hernandez, Urban Meyer's silence on the Aaron Hernandez investigation has come to an end. The Ohio State coach issued a statement via text message to several local news outlets on Saturday, including The Columbus Dispatch.
"Prayers and thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim," Meyer texted. "Relating or blaming these serious charges to the University of Florida, myself or our staff is wrong and irresponsible."
Meyer made it clear that his mission is to set the record straight regarding Aaron Hernadez's treatment while a member of the Gators' football team.
"I just received an email from a friend where there is an accusation of multiple failed drug tests by Hernandez covered up by the University of Florida or the coaching staff. This is absolutely not true," Meyer wrote. "Hernandez was held to the same drug testing policy as every other player.
"He was an athlete at Florida 4-7 years ago and there are some comments being made that are not correct. Our staff, myself and our families worked very hard to mentor and guide him."
Hernandez has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Odin Lloyd near Hernandez's home in North Attleboro, Mass. The ongoing investigation reportedly has authorities reviewing the details of a 2007 shooting in Gainesville, Fla., that left two men wounded. At the time of the shooting, Hernandez was a freshman on the Gators' football team.
Meyer was asked about Hernandez earlier this week but refused to comment on the situation. Texting in a statement -- reportedly on his way to a vacation -- is a great way to address the situation and get it out of the way before the Big Ten media days later this month. As Meyer, coming off an undefeated, untied season in 2012, prepares for the pursuit of a national title, the last thing he wants is questions regarding his past or Aaron Hernandez's criminal charges.
