Marijuana blood sugar

Marijuana blood sugar, A research team from the Harvard Medical School suggests that marijuana helps control the blood sugar of the body which may result to a lower risk of developing diabetes.

Marijuana is known to be an appetite booster yet there were three studies made before showing that marijuana users are less prone to obesity, have lower risk for diabetes, and have normal BMI.

Murray Mittleman, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and the lead author of the study, clarifies "The most important finding is that current users of marijuana appeared to have better carbohydrate metabolism than nonusers. Their fasting insulin levels were lower, and they appeared to be less resistant to the insulin produced by their body to maintain a normal blood-sugar level."

The team analyzed the data of 4,600 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2005 and 2010. They also considered other mitigating factors such as age, income, alcohol, smoking, physical activity and sex. 48 percent of them had smoked marijuana at least once while 12 percent were regular users.

The initial results reveal that the blood sugar levels of the regular users are 16 percent lower than the other group. They also have higher levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) that protects people from heart disease, and have smaller waistlines than the other group. The researchers were looking to detect the risk for Type II diabetes.

The team admits that they are not yet prepared to provide details on the relationship of marijuana with the results since they need to do further investigation.

There were studies before which imply that marijuana affects the cannabinoid brain receptors which dictates our appetite and metabolism. However, they haven't proven yet how it counteracts with appetite, caloric intake and insulin levels.
