Least-safe cities, These are the 11 U.S. cities with the highest crime rates from 2003 through 2009, according to an analysis of FBI violent and property crime reporting data by Onboard Informatics. Each city in this slide show has a crime risk index score based on that data. A score of 100 would mean that a city’s crime risk is equal to the national average. All of the 11 cities on this list have crime risk index scores of 331 or higher.
Do you feel safe at Disney World? Did you know that Orlando—home to the Happiest Place on Earth—is tied for the third highest crime rate in the nation, and that St. Louis is first? Today U.S. News published information about cities with the top crime rates, based on analysis of recent FBI data from 2003-2009.
But the FBI warns there are many variables affecting crime rate, including population density, modes of transportation available, concentration of youth, and even climate. The strength of law enforcement agencies is also a factor, a growing concern in the current financial climate, when many municipalities are cutting budgets. Also, the FBI’s website cautions, “one city may report more crime than a comparable one, not because there is more crime, but rather because its law enforcement agency, through proactive efforts, identifies more offenses.”
For these reasons, a city’s crime rate doesn’t always translate to a sense of danger or safety.
