Mookie Blaylock, Star guard Daron “Mookie” Blaylock was on life support at a hospital Friday after his SUV crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a van in suburban Atlanta, police said.
Blaylock was driving in Jonesboro on Friday when he crashed. He was airlifted to the Atlanta Medical Center in critical condition, Clayton County police spokesman Clarence Cox says. Terribly sad news. Our thoughts and prayers are with Blaylock and his family.
Blaylock, 46, had a 13-year NBA career, playing for the Nets, Hawks and Warriors. He led the league in steals both in the ’96/’97 and ’97/’98 seasons.
Drafted 12th overall by the New Jersey Nets in the 1989 draft, Blaylock excelled on defense, and was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team twice and All-Defensive Second Team four times. He was an NBA All Star in 1994.
You might also remember Mookie Blaylock as inspiration for Pearl Jam–they originally named their band “Mookie Blaylock” before Blaylock asked them to change it. Their 1991 album Ten is named in honor of Blaylock’s jersey number.
