Shawn Weimer let daughter drive, A father who admitted he had his 9-year-old daughter drive his van while he was intoxicated was sentenced this morning to two years of probation.
Shawn Weimer, 39, pleaded guilty in December to a felony child-abuse charge and a misdemeanor charge of allowing an unlicensed minor to operate a motor vehicle. I'd just like to say I'm sorry for all the trouble I caused," Weimer said in court.
He was sentenced to by Wayne County Circuit Judge Margie Braxton. Gas station surveillance video showed the girl, who has since turned 10, driving to and from the gas station in Brownstown Township last October. Inside the store, Weimer could be heard telling a clerk his daughter was his designated driver.
Weimer lived in Brownstown Township when the incident happened, but has since moved to Romulus. His daughter testified during a preliminary hearing that her father drank whiskey before she drove. She lives with her mother but was visiting her father. Police pulled her over as she drove her father's van.
Weimer declined to comment after sentencing.
"Shawn is relieved this thing is over," his attorney David Steingold said. "He's just trying to get back to life as normal with him and his child."
