Confirmed Apollo 11 engine found by Jeff Bezos
An engine part bearing the number 2044 -- confirmed as the serial number for Engine #5 from the Apollo 11 mission that put the first men on the moon."
The now confirmed Apollo engine parts had been in saltwater for 40 years before their discovery and suffered heavy corrosion. The serial numbers were obscured, which compounded the difficulty of this mission. The Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson, was able to read the part numbers using special lenses.
Their ship, the Seabed Worker, recovered the confirmed Apollo mission rocket parts. So far they have recovered enough parts to rebuild and display two F-1 images. Conservators identified the serial numbers using a combination of black light and special lenses. July 20, 2013 is the 44-year anniversary of Neil Armstrong stepping onto the moon.
