Pudu deer: Smallest in the world born in New York zoo, A Southern pudu deer was born in the Queens Zoo in New York. Weighing only one pound, she is of the smallest deer species in the world. According to United Press International on July 9, 2013, the deer was born in May.

"The as-yet unnamed baby deer weighed in at just one pound when she came into the world, born to mama deer Josephine and father, Hamilton."

Newborns of this size do not usually survive in the wild. Southern pudu deer are considered to be an endangered species and live natively in both Argentina and Chile. When fully grown the deer can get to be 20 pounds and up to 14 inches long. Single offspring are typical but sometimes twins are also born. Pudu deer live on the slopes of the Andes Mountains and are also called "Chilean mountain goats".

There are two species of pudu deer, both Northern and Southern. The Northern deer is found in Peru, Columbia, and Ecuador. Both species are considered endangered. The deer inhabit rain forests and are very solitary and secretive. Captive breeding is underway to help preserve the species.
