3D guns ordered down, Defense Distributed tweet on Thursday. We noted earlier this week that the Texas company had fired a 3D-printed gun dubbed the “Liberator” and shared its blueprints online, its leader framing the plans’ distribution as a censorship issue and declaring that technology trumps the power of “political players.”
The company said more than 500,000 people downloaded the blueprints this week — from file-hosting service Mega, Kim Dotcom’s new site. Said Cody Wilson, head of Defense Distributed, according to Forbes: “We’re sympathetic to Kim Dotcom. There are plenty of services we could have used, but we chose this one. He’s down for the struggle.”
(Also, Mega is free.) Dotcom’s first file-sharing site, New Zealand-based Megaupload, was shut down by the U.S. government last year. But wait, there’s more, because this Pandora’s box is already open: TorrentFreak reports that the blueprints are now available on perhaps the most infamous file-sharing site The Pirate Bay, which last year began hosting designs for “physibles.”
