Gold medalist dead: Andrew Simpson dies after catamaran capsizes near Alcatraz, Gold medalist Andrew Simpson died on Thursday afternoon after his Artemis Racing catamaran capsized near Alcatraz and the two-time Olympic medalist from the U.K. was submerged for 10 minutes before crew members could rescue him, reported ABC7 News on May 10, 2013.

On Thursday afternoon, Gold medalist Andrew Simpson was one of 11 men aboard the Swedish team's AC72 catamaran that was training for the America’s Cup which takes place from July through September.

Around 1 p.m., the racing catamaran was near Alcatraz on San Francisco Bay and sailing in winds blowing between 25 and 35 mph when it flipped over.

According to San Francisco Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes-White, after the racing catamaran flipped over, the Gold medalist became trapped underneath and “was submerged for 10 minutes.”

After a San Francisco Police Department boat rushed to the capsized catamaran and the Italian team pulled up with its crew members to rescue the capsized yacht, Gold medalist Andrew Simpson and another catamaran crew member were taken to the St. Francis Yacht Club. Despite 20 minutes of performing CPR, it was too late and at 1:43 p.m., 36-year-old Andrew Simpson was pronounced dead. The other crew member’s injuries were minor.

In a statement posted online, Artemis Racing CEO Paul Cayard said that “the entire Artemis Racing team is devastated by what happened. Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew's wife and family."
