Deborah Dermack out of control truck hit postal worker

Deborah Dermack out of control truck hit postal worker, A mother heroically pushed her two young children out of harm's way as an out-of-control truck raced onto a Manhattan sidewalk and hit a postal worker on Thursday afternoon.

"It happened so quickly," Deborah Dermack said of her split-second actions along Third Ave. near E. 30th St. in Murray Hill.

Dermack, a doctor, pushed her 2-year-old daughter, Hannah, and 10-month-old son, Sam, out of the path of the truck as it barreled onto the sidewalk about 3:20 p.m.

The truck - which may have experienced brake failure - ran over a MuniMeter, a street sign and a small tree, officials and witnesses said. The sidewalk mayhem continued when the truck hit the U.S. Postal Service worker, who was walking along the sidewalk, witnesses said.

"We ain't got no brakes," the driver yelled, according to a passenger, who did not want to give his name.
"I put my hands over my face. I didn't want to see what was going to happen."

The truck snapped the tree, which clipped Dermack as it crashed to the pavement. Her children were not hurt. She was taken to NYU Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries, officials said.

The unidentified postal worker was treated at the same hospital, also for minor injuries, police said. After blazing the trail of destruction on the sidewalk, the truck driver tried to pull back onto the avenue and was hit by a van, the passenger and witnesses said. Police are investigating the crash.
