Nurse Admits Murdering 11 in Sydney

Nurse Admits Murdering 11 in Sydney, An Australian nurse has pleaded guilty to 11 counts of murder after setting a fire that killed residents of the Sydney nursing home where he worked, the Sydney Morning Herald reported Monday.

In 2011, Roger Dean, 37, set the fire to the Quaker Hill Nursing Home in an attempt to cover up his theft of painkillers. On Monday, the former nurse pleaded guilty to the murders on the first day of what was supposed to have been a four-week trial, according to News.com.au.

Dean was famously interviewed by news reporters moments after setting fire to the home. In the video, he described his attempts to get Quaker Hill residents to safety.

Elly Valkay, whose 90-year-old mother Neeltje Valkay was killed in the blaze, felt confident that justice would carried out.

"It wasn't happiness of course, I still miss my mother very much and the rest of our family miss her greatly, especially her grandchildren," Valkay said.

"It was, I think, joy in my heart to see that my mother would say 'yes justice is going to be done and we're going to see it.'"
