NBA london mexico city, In its effort to further globalize the game of basketball while promoting the league in foreign countries, the NBA has announced two 2013-2014 regular season games outside of the U.S. and Canada.
Mexico City will host a game between the San Antonio Spurs and the Minnesota Timberwolves on Dec. 4 and London will host a game between the Brooklyn Nets and the Atlanta Hawks at the world-famous O2 arena on Jan. 16. The games are part of what’s officially known as the NBA Global Games schedule, which already includes eight preseason games that will be hosted in Turkey, Spain, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, Taiwan, Brazil and China this October.
Though the NBA has staged regular-season games overseas in years past, this addition to the Global Games schedule marks the first time two regular-season games will be played outside of the U.S. and Canada in the same season.
“With the addition of regular-season games in London and Mexico City, we will play one of the most comprehensive international games schedules in our history next season,” said NBA Commissioner David Stern, via NBA.com. “Through these games, we will bring the NBA experience to more fans and provide showcases for basketball and the extraordinary talent and athleticism of our players.”
The Atlanta Hawks organization is especially excited to travel abroad, as it has never played a regular-season game outside of North America.
“Playing in London will be a special experience for our players and coaches, and we are proud to represent Atlanta in front of an international audience,” Hawks president and GM Danny Ferry said in a statement, according to ESPN.com.
