Skeletal remains corning, The skeletal remains of a woman discovered by the Tehama County Sheriff's Department south of Corning on Saturday is under forensic investigation at the Anthropology Department of California State University, Chico, Tehama County sheriff's Lt. Dave Greer said.

The skeleton was dug up in the 23000 block of Loleta Avenue.

"We received a tip that human remains could be found at that location," Greer said. "We conducted a search and found what appears to be the skeleton of female adult buried at that site."

Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said the tip came in about two months ago, and the department has been pulling together a team of specialist since then for the investigation.

That team, consisting of sheriff's detectives and university forensic anthropologists, partnered at the site Saturday to remove the remains from a 2-foot-deep grave.

Greer said the remains still had some clothing attached to it and "other artifacts," and it appears the body may have been there since the late 1970s.

"The remains did not appear to have been encased in anything before it was buried," Greer said.

He said the tip was not anonymous, but at this time he would not release anymore information on the identity of the person involved.

Johnston said detectives have a theory as to the woman's cause of death, but that it was only a theory.

Det. Rob Brinton said the department should have forensic results from the university in a week or two.

He reported the team was able to remove what seemed to be a complete skeleton and the case is being handled as "suspicious in nature."

"We are checking on missing persons reports from the 1970s," Brinton said.

Greer said they are looking into one particular missing person report, but would not expand on that information.
