N.C. deck collapse: Rusty nails may be cause of deck in condo falling, N.C. deck collapse has frightened many after an oceanfront deck in a second-story condo suddenly fell through this week in Ocean Isle Beach, leaving over 20 people hurt in the fall to the patio below, FOX19 reported this Wednesday, July 10. Although the cause of the deck abruptly collapsing hasn’t been confirmed, a building inspector believes rusty nails and too much weight may have been the culprit.
The N.C. deck collapse injured a total of 21 people Tuesday night when it suddenly fell in a second-story condo complex. Roughly 25 people were thought to be out enjoying the evening air when the deck collapsed, sending its occupants a dozen feet to the concrete ground below. Both adults and children were believed to be out on the deck when it fell in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.
The cause? Rusty nails, possibly.
In a 911 call, one of the girls in the N.C. deck collapse said that their deck at the beach house “just fell through.”
"Our porch at our beach house condo just fell thru," one of the girls said on a 911 call. "We were all taking a family picture and it just fell and a couple people are hurt. It just fell."
Several building surveyors inspected the accident site at the condo Wednesday morning after emergency officials had arrived. Fortunately, no one was killed when the deck collapsed, though many people suffered minor injuries.
According to the inspectors, rusty nails and an overload of weight (holding roughly 25 people) were the likely causes of the N.C. deck collapse. Having 25 people on deck (regardless of the 21 people injured) meant that anywhere from 3,800 to 4,200 pounds were putting too great strain on the wooden deck.
