Van susteren FOX, Buried within the New York Times write-up on Megyn Kelly‘s impending move to Fox News primetime is a paragraph confirming that, as we first reported, Greta Van Susteren initiated meetings with CNN, seeking a possible return to the cable network with which she began her TV career.

“Several Web sites, including Mediaite, reported this week that Ms. Van Susteren had held talks with CNN, seeking a job at that network,” the Times‘ Bill Carter wrote. “A CNN executive confirmed Tuesday that those talks had taken place.”

That CNN upper-level confirmation flies in the face of Van Susteren’s blog swipe at “the courage of anonymous sources” and “those who then speculate,” which seemingly acted as a de facto non-denial denial of our scoop that she had initiated talks with CNN about a possible return.

“I am not going anywhere,” she wrote. No one said she was. Just that she initiated talks with CNN about possibly going somewhere. She could also mean “not going anywhere” as in “not vacating the 10 p.m. time slot,” but you notice she conspicuously did not say so.

“I have a long term contract with Fox and it is for a show in ‘prime time,’” she added in similarly vague terms.

So what does that actually mean?

The long-standing speculation has held that Van Susteren will lose her 10 p.m. spot, as our own Joe Concha noted last night. Her husband once told the Times that she’d welcome a move to an earlier slot, and so some believe she’s moving up to the 7 p.m. hour — though that technically doesn’t count as “prime time,” as Alex Weprin wrote today. Others have speculated she could “share” a show with another primetime personality, perhaps Megyn Kelly, though that seems highly unlikely.

The other possibility that fulfills this “prime time” requirement is a move to the weekend prime hours. Some see that as a likely possibility but, again, who knows?

And then, of course, there’s the possibility that Van Susteren stays put at 10 p.m. and someone else moves to make room for the new Kelly hour.

As with most cable news inside baseball maneuverings, we know nothing right now. But here’s what we do know: Months ago, Greta Van Susteren talked to CNN about coming back; and Megyn Kelly is moving to primetime.
