Mike Krzyzewski

Mike Krzyzewski, Mike Krzyzewski is in discussions to return as the United States Olympic men's basketball coach through the Rio 2016 Olympics, according to SI.com.

The Duke coach said during and after the 2012 London Olympics that he didn't plan to come back to the U.S. team after guiding it to a second straight gold medal.

However, Krzyzewski told SI.com on Saturday that he and USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo have been talking about his return "quite a bit."

"I think it's very close to being resolved," Colangelo said in the SI.com report. "That's all I can say for sure.

"Give it another week and it should be resolved."

Krzyzewski told ESPN Radio's "Mike & Mike in the Morning" in February that he expected the Americans to pick a new coach this summer.

Colangelo originally said he planned to name a new coach sometime around the new year. But since the Americans don't have to play again until 2014, he put off those plans so Krzyzewski could focus on Duke's season.

In the SI.com report, Colangelo said he never approached other candidates -- assumed to be the Boston Celtics' Doc Rivers and San Antonio Spurs' Gregg Popovich from the NBA and Michigan State's Tom Izzo from the college ranks.

Colangelo hired Krzyzewski in 2005 after taking over a U.S. program that was coming off debacles at the 2004 Olympics and 2002 world basketball championship. After a third-place finish at the 2006 worlds, the Americans haven't lost since, adding gold at the 2010 worlds to the pair of Olympic titles.

Now, Coach K could be back to oversee the next chapter of USA Basketball.

"There's a chance," Krzyzewski told SI.com. "That's correct."
