Savannah nash

Savannah nash, A 16-year-old girl who died Thursday in a collision with a tractor trailer in Cass County may have been texting in the moments leading up to the crash, authorities said.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports Savannah Nash was heading northbound at 7 Highway and Walker Road when she failed to yield and was struck by the truck.

Nash, of Harrisonville, was pronounced dead on the scene. She was wearing a seat belt, according to a preliminary crash report from the Highway Patrol.

A Highway Patrol spokesman says she had a lengthy, unsent text message on her phone, and the driver of the truck said he may have seen something in her hand as she approached.

That sent shockwaves through Harrisonville High School and sparked a movement online. Within the day, a facebook page titled 'Let's STOP texting and driving in honor of Savannah Nash" had been created.

"I think it is kind of a rude awakening for everybody," said Matt Stanwix, a Harrisonville High student. She was a nice girl," said freshman Joey Todd. "She always made people smile, she was athletic, played soccer."

Other students said the school's FFA chapter all wore their shirts in honor of Savannah, a very active FFA member.
The 60-year-old driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.

Authorities have not listed an official cause of the crash. It remains under investigation.
