Seahawks QB arrested

Seahawks QB arrested, Seahawks backup quarterback Josh Portis faces arraignment next week after being arrested on May 5 on suspicion of driving under the influence. He has been charged with a misdemeanor.

About 9: 30 p.m. that day, a Washington State Patrol trooper pulled over Portis on the express lanes of the Interstate 90 floating bridge after clocking the Range Roger he was driving at 80 mph as it left the Mount Baker Tunnel eastbound, in a 60-mph zone, according to a police report.

When the trooper stepped up to Portis’ window, according to the report, there was “a strong odor of intoxicants coming from the vehicle” and Portis had “watery bloodshot eyes.”

Portis said he hadn’t been drinking, but the trooper asked him to step out of the car. A person in the passenger’s seat “stated Portis was a Seahawk player, and he did not have to get out of the car,” the trooper wrote in the incident report.

After the trooper’s third request, Portis stepped out of the car and agreed to a field sobriety test but not to a breath test. Portis allegedly said he did not have anything to drink, and was on his way home from Seattle.

“Portis asked me if I knew who he was and I stated yes,” the trooper wrote in the report. “(The passenger) exited the vehicle and began to cry. (The passenger) stated I was arresting a Seahawk, and I was going to ruin him. … (The passenger) shouted at me and stated she couldn’t believe that I was from Seattle, and was arresting a Seahawk.”

After being taken to State Patrol headquarters, the quarterback allegedly admitted to drinking tequila at a Cinco de Mayo event at Alki Beach in Seattle. “I asked Portis why he lied to me at the roadside about his alcohol consumption and he stated he was nervous,” the trooper wrote.

Portis, 25, will appear May 28 at the Redmond Courthouse for arraignment. Seattlepi.com did not publish the name of the passenger because she was not charged with any crime.

On April 4, the Seahawks confirmed signing Portis — who previously was the Seahawks’ third-string QB before being cut in September and released from the practice squad in November — to a two-year deal. An undrafted rookie in 2011 out of California University of Pennsylvania, Portis was expected to compete for the backup quarterback job to starter Russell Wilson, yet has competition from Brady Quinn and Jerrod Johnson.
