Bret Easton Ellis twitter

Bret Easton Ellis twitter, Writer Bret Easton Ellis is famously outspoken on Twitter, so it’s no surprise that the social media site proved his venting outlet of choice after he learned that some callous remarks he made about the LGBT community landed him squarely on the not-welcome list for Saturday’s GLAAD Media Awards.

“As a gay man in a domestic partnership who plans to get married, I’m sad to hear I’ve been banned by GLAAD from attending tomorrow’s event,” Ellis tweeted. “GLAAD is supposedly ‘furious’ about my tweets. And I’m guessing not the ones concerning my boyfriend or how sexy I think Adam Driver is.”

Responding to Ellis’ allegations, GLAAD’s Vice President of Communications Rich Ferraro told EW, “Given the crude remarks he’s made about the gay community and people living with HIV/AIDS, this publicity stunt is not surprising.”

The organization revealed that it has attempted to rectify its issues with him and his insensitive comments previously, but he has failed to respond to its requests. “GLAAD spoke with the guest who was planning to bring Bret about his recent remarks, which the gay community responded negatively to.

We also asked for a time to sit down with Bret and planned to invite other leaders in the gay community as well as the HIV/AIDS community,” Ferraro said. “The guest replaced Bret at the fundraiser and there has been no response from Bret regarding the meeting. It is a shame and disservice to the gay community that Bret appears to be trying to overshadow the high-profile allies, including Betty White, Chris Evans, Kelly Rowland and so many others who used the event to show their support for LGBT people and advocated for equality in the Boy Scouts, marriage and across the country.”

The tweets the American Psycho writer is referencing – by his own admission – are most likely his controversial statements about FOX’s Glee and actor Matt Bomer. In April 2011, Ellis tweeted, “I like the idea of Glee, but why is it that every time I watch an episode I feel like I’ve stepped into a puddle of HIV?”

In August of last year, Ellis decided to weigh in on the rumors that Magic Mike and White Collar star Bomer was being courted for the role of Christian Grey in the film adaptation of the best-selling novel 50 Shades of Grey. Ellis’ argument focused on the openly gay actor’s believability playing a straight character. “Okay I’ll say it. Matt Bomer isn’t right for Christian Grey because he is openly gay,” he wrote. “He’s great for other roles but this is too big a game.”
He has also referred to NBC’s The New Normal as a “gay minstrel show,” in which Andrew Rannell’s character “makes Sean Hayes in Will & Grace seem like Jason Statham in just about anything”

Ellis went on to allege that GLAAD had advised the guest to warn the author to not air his grievances on Twitter.
“It’s GLAAD’s party and they can invite whoever they want, but as the guest of someone invited who was told today she can’t bring me, well… After GLAAD banned me they told the friend who was bringing me to the event to WARN ‘Bret not to go public or TWEET about this decision,’” Ellis wrote.

The star-studded annual event honors the outstanding representation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and the issues across media. The Perks of Being a Wallflower picked up the award for Outstanding Film – Wide Release, The New Normal won Best Comedy Series and American Horror Story: Asylum walked away with the Outstanding TV Movie or Mini-Series prize.

In addition to Leonardo DiCaprio, Charlize Theron, host Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Lawrence, who presented the Advocate for Change Award to Bill Clinton, Captain America himself, Chris Evans, along with his mother and openly gay brother Scott Evans, attended the event to “come out as an ally for equality.”
