teen's $54k bar tab: Japan won't have to be paid in full

Teen's $54k bar tab:  Japan won't have to be paid in full, A Kyoto District Court in Japan has ruled that bar owners and credit card companies have the major responsibility in monitoring the use of a credit card.

While a father is ideally in charge of his son’s spending behavior, the Kyoto court showed in its ruling that there are limits to how much a father can control his 16-year-old son.

The major parties in control of a 16-year-old teen’s spending spree in a bar are the bars and credit card companies. Without their approval, the 16-year-old teen would not have been able to accumulate a $54K bar tab.

As such, the Kyoto District Court ruled that the boy’s father only has to pay 800,000 yen out of the 5.5 million yen bill that the teen accrued on his bar tab. In dollars, the father has to pay about $7,871.69 out of the teen’s $54,000 bar tab.

The bar owners and the credit card company have to bear “the lion's share of responsibility” for the misuse of the credit card.

In 2010, the 16-year-old and his friend took his father's platinum American Express card around luxury nightspots in the ancient capital of Kyoto.

The two teens who have not been identified because of their age, were lured into classy clubs where “patrons are expected to pay for time spent with attractive women, whose job it is to laugh demurely at their host's wit.”

The company of attractive women is complemented with whisky and champagne at a price of 380,000 yen ($3,700) per bottle but does not include any kind of physical intimacy.

While the bar owners and American Express will have to take care of the teen's $54K bar tab, the 16-year-old teen’s father will have to take care of some father-son talk about the powerful lure of women.
