Jobless benefits cut

Jobless benefits cut, Too bad the person who wrote the letter about regressive legislation doesn’t know anyone unemployed or anything about unemployment benefits. Apparently all she does is read the News and Observer for her information, which is completely, slanted left with no opposing viewpoints. I am a former human resource administrator of a large public N.C. university.

One of my duties was to help find work for those unemployed either with the state or in private companies. Eight out of 10 of those I assisted, turned down interviews saying quote “I want to wait until my unemployment runs out before I look for work.” Another told me she wasn’t going to get serious about job hunting while she was still eligible for unemployment. Another relative told me she only applied to things she wasn’t qualified for so that she wouldn’t get called for an interview. This fulfilled the state requirement to apply for 2 jobs a week. Some people put things on their application that would immediately disqualify them like “bad driver”.

So in trying to help these people, we are disabling them. These benefits are meant to help the laid off employee temporarily, not support and pay for their expenses for almost two years.

The former unemployment benefits were extended to 99 weeks. By providing the extended time, we have effectively kept them down and this in turn hurts businesses, tax payers, and what I call the “working class.” These are people that work for a living. There are legitimate laid off workers who really do want to work but frauds and unemployment cheats are hurting those that truly want and need work. Even law abiding, middle class people are tempted; it is human nature to take the easy road.

Let me ask YOU a question. If you were out of work for more than a year and you had to pay rent, and feed a family, wouldn’t you get any job you could find? Including working a fast food restaurant? It may not be the same as the job you had but is an income. It is time to stop enabling these people. Miraculously, by the time their unemployment benefits ran out, all of the above people I mentioned found a job. Lets start giving people a hand up not keeping them eternally dependent on federal government which by the way always comes with plenty of strings attached.

Hats off to the N.C. legislature and the governor for having a backbone and providing legislation to actually advance our state and our citizens!
