Roberto Kelly Concussion, Giants Coach Out Until Game 3? Members of the San Francisco Giants are thankful to hear that one of their coaches should only miss a few games with a concussion after being drilled in the head by baseball.
Giant's first-base coach Roberto Kelly did not attend the game on Sunday due to a concussion and will not be on the field until at least Game 3 of the NLCS, manager Bruce Bochy said.
The incident occurred while Giants player Buster Posey was taking batting practice. Posey hit a line drive that hit Kelly in the head during the team's workout at AT&T Park. Kelly was struck in the back of the head and immediately fell to the ground.
Reports indicate that he was down for several minutes but eventually was able to walk off the field with the help of training staff.
"Roberto will not be on the field. He's got a concussion," Bochy said during a press conference.
"I don't see him being out there at least these two games, if not longer. He's at home, he's resting well [but] he didn't sleep much last night. He hasn't come in yet. Dave Groeschner, our trainer, and I were hoping he could come in so they could check him out again," he added.
His replacement, Joe Lefebrve, is an assistant hitting coach who was on the first base line during the Giants World Series appearance in 2002 and is scheduled to be next to the bag for Game 2.
While the Giants will keep their hearts and minds with Kelly and his family, they still have a lot of work to do if they want to make it back to the World Series. One of the positives that came from this situation is the fact that Lefebrve is familiar with the team and has been around baseball for years.
"Joe, he's got some experience," Bochy said. "He's been coaching in the big leagues. He's been here all year."
