Tuna Factory Death, Authorities are investigating after an employee at a seafood plant was found dead in an oven, company officials said Saturday. The accident happened about 7 a.m. Thursday at the Bumble Bee Foods factory in the 13100 block of Arctic Circle in Santa Fe Springs.
Jose Malena, 62, was discovered inside a cooking device called a "steamer machine." Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.
A spokeswoman for Cal-OHSA said it was unclear how Malena, an employee at the factory for over 6 years, ended up inside the device. Per Cal-OSHA policy, an investigation has been launched into whether there were any violations of health and safety regulations.
"The entire Bumble Bee Foods family is saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Melena family," Bumble Bee Foods spokesman Pat Menke said in a statement.
Operations have been suspended at the plant since Thursday morning and are expected to resume Monday.
