Amazing science: Stem cell research results in a human liver, Researchers in Japan have finally reached a pinnacle in stem cell research. According to a July 3 report on Yahoo News, they have managed to create a functional human liver from stem cells. While they are around 10 years from transplanting man-made livers into humans, this is a major development.
The general public has not realized what amazing medical phenomena are already possible using stem cell research. There has been a great deal of opposition to stem cell research because of ethical reasons.
This issue has become a hot button issue because of the misunderstanding that only the stem cells of aborted embryos are being used, and this is simply not true. There are two types of stem cells: those from embryos and the type originating from skin and blood. This new advance in liver growth uses the latter.
We may be only a few years away from being able to solve a myriad of previously fatal health issues through the use of stem cells. Already, scientists are capable of growing teeth!
