Forest swastikas: Mystery about swastikas made by larches continues, Forest swastikas have posed a mystery in Germany -- and around the world. On July 7, ABC News reported that several trees in forests in Germany have grown in a bright color in the shape of a swastika. No one knows how these trees grew in such a way or who might be responsible for them growing like this.
The trees were actually discovered over 20 years ago and only because the trees -- known as larches -- changed color in the fall and were surrounded by evergreen pine trees. So, in the fall, the larches would turn a bright yellow/orange color and it was clear that they were in the formation of swastikas.
Forest swastikas have been studied for many years but they are still a mystery. Brandenburg native Günter Reschke has been studying these trees over the years but the only explanations given are rumors and speculation. Some say that the trees were planted as a "gift" back and others believe a farmer planted them when he was a child.
Either way, the trees were cut down in 2000 -- but several other ones have popped up in various regions since. Is someone planting these trees on purpose? Is this some strange coincidence? The mystery continues.
Forest swastikas, some fear, could be a place for neo-Nazis to travel to -- which is one reason that many regions have been quick to get the trees removed.
