Louisiana Sinkhole: Residents Forced To Make Difficult Decisions

Louisiana Sinkhole: Residents Forced To Make Difficult Decisions, A Louisiana sinkhole is forcing residents to make some difficult decisions. The sinkhole, discovered on August 3, 2012, has resulted in the advised evacuation of 350 residents. For many residents, abandoning their home is a devastating option.

The sinkhole was the result of a collapsed salt dome in Bayou Corne, Louisiana. A salt dome is a large underground salt deposit. The salt is traditionally mined from the outer edges to prevent a collapse.

Authorities believe the Louisiana dome collapsed when a cavern was created to close to the edge.

Oil and natural gasses spilling from the hole have authorities concerned for the health of area residents.

As reported by Fox News, the salt dome is operated by the Texas Brine Company. Taking responsibility for the collapse, the Texas Brine Co. has offered 92 residents buyouts for the property and homes.

Only 44 residents have accepted the offer. Numerous other residents have joined together to file a class action lawsuit against the mining company.

The trial is not expected to begun until next year, leaving residents with a difficult decision. Remaining in the area could be incredibly dangerous. The natural gasses could collect in a confined space and case an explosion. The oil is another concern, as ground water may become contaminated.

Some residents have decided to stay, hoping for the best. Remaining residents receive progress reports daily, and their homes have been outfitted with gas monitors. Most of the affected residents have been receiving weekly compensation from the brine company.

Authorities expect the Louisiana sinkhole to stabilize on its own as debris fills in the open space. However, others are concerned that the sinkhole is still unstable.

As reported by The Island Packet, the evacuation was not mandatory. Residents have been informed of all possible consequences. Many residents chose the neighborhood for the waterfront properties and friendly tight-knit community.

The community they grew to love is now literally crumbling. Many residents have abandoned their homes and future safety is in question. The Louisiana sinkhole created more than a mess in the Assumption Parish community. It has also left residents feeling fear, resentment, and uncertainty.
