Boyfriend wrecks Danica Patrick: That's one way to taint pillow talk, Danica Patrick's wreck Sunday was thanks to boyfriend, Ricky Stenhouse, as the first couple of NASCAR had their first dance with twisted metal together.
While Patrick's boyfriend wasn't blamed for the wreck at first, replay of the crash showed it was his car that made contact with Patrick's car first during the Coca Cola 600, according to Sporting News NASCAR on May 27, 2013.
Stenhouse slid into the side of Patrick's car while racing three-wide with 64 laps remaining. This pushed Patrick slightly up the track. Patrick clipped Brad Keselowski's car, sending them both crashing into the wall.
Three cars were involved in the wreck driven by Patrick, Stenhouse and Brad Keselowski. It was Keselowski who took the blame for this crash first, even apologizing to Patrick in an interview he gave to the media. Keselowski had been very critical of Patrick earlier this year saying that she was “someone that hasn’t won races or proved that she is competitive.”
While the crash put Danica out of the race, retiring in 21st position, her boyfriend Stenhouse went on to finish. Keselowski crawled back to the pit in 32nd position. Keselowski said in his statement to the media:
“I just cut Danica off,” Keselowski said. “I didn’t know she was still down there and I caused a big wreck. … I cut her off and wrecked her and myself. I feel bad for her and I send my apologies to her.”
Patrick didn't talk to reporters after the race, but she was informed over her radio by her team that it looked as if it was Stenhouse who slid into her. She agreed with that assessment. She did release a statement about the wreck:
“I felt like we were making real progress and starting to get the car to a place that was really good, and had an accident, which is unfortunate because we were moving up,” Patrick said. “But nothing we can do about it now.”
