Ian Kennedy dishes, Diamondbacks right-hander Ian Kennedy will be forced to skip a Monday start because of a laceration in his right index finger that occurred when he was doing the dishes.
Kennedy cut himself as he was washing a knife, joining a short list of major-leaguers for whom the explanation probably was more painful than the injury itself.
"There is no cool story to it. It is kind of embarrassing. Cleaning a knife. It stinks, because it is something I easily could control," said Kennedy, 2-3 with a 4.70 ERA in 10 starts.
Kennedy's takeaway?
"I can't wash any more knives," he said.
Kennedy is not the only one in the majors to suffer a similar injury; heck, he was not the only one at Chase Field on Sunday.
San Diego right-hander Andrew Cashner suffered a cut on his right thumb in December when he and a hunting partner were cleaning a carcass and he was forced to open the season in the bullpen instead of the rotation because the recovery time extended into spring training.
San Francisco left-hander Jeremy Affeldt suffered a lacerated right hand that caused nerve damage when he cut himself while trying to separate frozen hamburger patties in September 2011, forcing him to miss the rest of the season.
The D-backs' medical personnel told Kennedy he should be 100 percent in time for him to start Friday, the first game of a three-game series in Chicago against the Cubs.
Left-hander Tyler Skaggs, who is 4-5 with a 5.23 ERA at Triple-A Reno, will take Kennedy's place on the mound in the first game of a day/night doubleheader against Texas on Monday. Skaggs has made three consecutive quality starts with the Aces, going 2-1 with a 2.53 ERA. He had 10 strikeouts and no walks in 7 2/3 innings Wednesday in a 6-2 victory over Round Rock, and six of his nine starts at hitter-friendly Reno have been quality starts.
