Man shoots daughters, An armed man who may have traveled up from the Carolinas bent on murdering a West Peabody mom killed himself instead in her father’s family room Sunday night after shooting at her and her daughters as they fled, according to police, family and witnesses.
According to the woman’s father, Tony Salvaggio, she recognized trouble the minute she looked him in the eyes.
“They could have been dead in this house — all three of them,” an angry Salvaggio, 68, said of his daughter and grandchildren, ages 12 and 18.
The suspect’s identity was being withheld by authorities yesterday pending notification of his next of kin.
Carrie Kimball-Monahan, spokeswoman for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett, said last night the DA would have no comment while the case remains under investigation.
Peabody police said the barricaded suspect shot himself inside Salvaggio’s house on Monson Drive as a crisis negotiator for the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council SWAT team tried to raise a response from him. A camera-equipped robot found his body.
Salvaggio said the man was believed to be a neighbor of cousins his daughter recently visited in South Carolina.
Salvaggio, who was not home during the incident, said his daughter had gone out to an ice cream truck and was getting into her car with her kids when, she told him, “This guy walks up and puts a gun to the window.”
With the 12-year-old in the car and the teenager jumping in, Salvaggio said his daughter “sped off” as the gunman opened fire. “He blew out the back window.”
Police said, “The unwanted person shot at her vehicle several times with some of the rounds striking her vehicle.”
Neighbor Sharlene Oblenis said she heard “what sounded like gunshots ... and a girl screaming,” and saw a man outside the Salvaggios’ home “just turn and walk back in.” Joseph Poli, 66, said police surrounded the Salvaggio house: “There was a guy with a bullhorn saying, ‘Willie, if you’re there, flick the lights so we know you’re OK.’ No response. That’s when I surmised he was either dead or he ran. It was a lot of drama. Thank God no one else was hurt.”
