'The Voice' season 4 top 8: Judith Hill takes a 'power'ful risk, "The Voice" season four resumed May 27 on NBC with a set of performances by the top eight finalists. Soul singer Judith Hill of Team Adam Levine kicked off the two-hour episode with a risky remix of a will.i.am pop hit that drew nothing but praise from the four coaches.
During her mentoring session with Levine, Hill said she wanted to "really show the world who Judith is." The Maroon 5 frontman admitted to being "shocked" by her pick for the week, "#thatPOWER," calling the will.i.am/Justin Bieber collaboration "very radically different than anything" she'd done. He changed his tune after hearing her sing her own artistic take on the song, predicting that it could wind up being more popular than the original. Hill thought it could prove to be a decisive moment in her career on "The Voice."
She looked like a star when she hit the stage to perform live, and her remix most definitely did not disappoint. While the lyrics of the original were recognizable, she made the feel of the it entirely her own like a true artist would do.
The coaches loved Hill's effort. Blake Shelton called her singing "spot on" and and expressed special appreciation for her "rock star" sky-high hairdo and cape. He especially loved seeing her personality shine through. Usher called it "an incredible way to open the show" and liked how she gave "the song a new face." Shakira appreciated her fashion sense and thought it was great to see her do something more "current." Levine reiterated that he was "confused" by the pick from the outset, but that he was "so happy" that he let her do it. He called her not just a contestant, but "an artist performing a song."
As of the morning of May 28, Hill's performance ranked just number 88 on the iTunes chart, suggesting that she will not benefit from the coveted ten-times vote multiplier for downloads during the top eight results show.
