Since Sheed's 41, Antoine Walker's 23 technicals is the most by someone not named Rasheed Wallace. The leader in the last full NBA season (2010-11) had just 19 techs.
The real reason the record will never be broken is not that Sheed is craziest NBA player ever, it's a rule change instituted in 2006.
Now, once a player gets 16 technicals, he get suspended one game without pay. After that, he is suspended one game without pay for each additional technical foul.
So if someone was on a Sheed-ian pace, they'd simply run out of games in which to get technicals. If a player got a technical in every other game (Sheed's pace), he'd get suspended by game #32. That'd leave 50 regular season games to get 25 technicals, meaning he have to get a technical in every single game in which he is eligible to play for the rest of the year (when you factor in suspensions).
It's technically possible. But the player would be sacrificing a huge chunk of his salary, and would have to be legitimately trying to set the record.
As long as the 16-technical rule is in place, Sheed's 41 will stand forever.
He will make his Knicks debut against the Heat tonight.
