2013 hurricane season begins: Tropical Storm Andrea set to hit Florida, The unofficial start of the Atlantic hurricane season is June 1 and Mother Nature has wasted no time in delivering its first named storm. Tropical Storm Andrea has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to make landfall in Florida Thursday afternoon or evening.
Andrea was named yesterday as its winds reached the requisite 39 mph tropical storm strength. It has since intensified and the National Hurricane Center says the storm’s winds are up to 60 mph.
As of 8:00 a.m. EDT Andrea was 160 miles west of Tampa or 140 miles south of Apalachicola. It was moving toward the north-northeast at 14 mph.
A slight turn to the northeast is expected during the day today putting landfall on Florida’s Big Bend no later than this evening. From there it will move across southeastern Georgia and on to South and North Carolina by Friday.
Tropical storm warnings have been posted for portions of Florida’s west coast as well as the southeastern Atlantic seaboard. Areas in the warning include.
The West Coast of Florida from Boca Grande to Indian Pass
Flagler Beach Florida to Cape Charles Light Virginia
Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds
Lower Chesapeake Bay South of New Point Comfort
The wind is of course expected to be a hazard as the storm nears land. Also of concern will be storm surge of up to 5 feet as well as rainfall amounts up to 6 inches.
