Matt smith doctor who

Matt smith doctor who, After four years wielding the sonic screwdriver, Matt Smith is to stand down as the Doctor, it has been announced.

He will star in the eagerly awaited 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who in November and his regeneration into a new form will take place in the Christmas special. Details of his exit are being kept under wraps.

His departure is likely to spark intense speculation about who will replace him. Smith said: “The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other. It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the Tardis for a spell.”

Smith was a surprise choice to become the eleventh Time Lord and many thought he could not live up to the achievement of his popular predecessor, David Tennant. But he became the first actor to be nominated for a Bafta in the role, and in 2012 won the Most Popular Male Drama Performance category at the National Television Awards.

He starred alongside three different companions, Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) and most recently Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), and along the way almost succeeded in making bow-ties fashionable.

His debut in the role coincided with that of Steven Moffat as lead writer and executive producer, and Smith paid tribute to him. “Having Steven Moffat as show runner write such varied, funny, mind-bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career,” he said. “It's been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he's a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.”

Moffat in turn said: “Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he'd turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently.”

The search is now on for a replacement. Moffat said: “Somewhere out there right now - all unknowing, just going about their business - is someone who's about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that's still so exciting.”

Smith recently made his directing debut, a TV drama for Sky Arts 1, and announced in an interview with the Telegraph his intention to do more directing. "Kubrick’s the man to follow: a film in every genre," he said.
The 50th anniversary episode will be broadcast on BBC One on November 23.
