Closest finish in Indy history, Four cars flash across the line at the Indianapolis super-speedway in the blink of an eye — or four-hundredths of a second to be precise.
Irishman Peter Dempsey, car No5 at the top of the picture, was the winner of the Indy Lights race supporting the big one, the Indy 500.
Dempsey, well known to British fans in recent years as a front-runner in Formula Ford, beat runner-up Gabby Chaves (No7), by 0.0026 of a second — the smallest winning margin ever in the Indy oval’s history.
Chaves, Sage Karam (No8) and Carlos Munoz (No26) were involved in a thrilling dice for the lead going into the last of 40 laps.
But Dempsey sneaked up on the lot of them coming out of the final turn to take the chequered flag and his first win in the Lights series.
He said: “There’s no better place to do it than at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It’s massive.”
Young British hotshot Jack Hawksworth was in the mix early on but retired after a brush with Indy’s unforgiving wall.
