High school QB drowns: Body recovered off North Carolina beach in choppy waters,A high school quarterback drowned in North Carolina after swimming with friends in the choppy waters off North Topsail Beach. According to the Inquistr on May 25, 2013, Shak Pershey went into the water about 7 p.m. on Thursday night and never surfaced.
The local authority search for Southwest Onslow High School student was joined by teams from the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard, but rough seas caused the search to be called off about two hours in. The teams stopped searching except for the local police, who continued searching and found Pershey's body about 2 a.m. off Topsail Beach.
Authorities believe that Pershey might have drown after getting caught in a cross current, which would drag him down underwater. Even an athlete as fit as Pershey is no match for the strong current or rip tides that the Atlantic Ocean offers.
Pershey was a star high school football player and he was getting ready to graduate in a few weeks. His plans were then to attend Chowan University in the fall.
