Communal violence erupted in Myanmar between the Buddhist and Muslim regions. Buddhists riots, armed with machetes, forced thousands of Muslims to flee their homes. The violence has left hundreds dead and caused the displacement of 125,000 people, mostly Muslims.

The religious uprising has morphed from these excesses in a campaign against other Muslim communities across the country.

"The population growth of Rohingya Muslims is 10 times higher than that of the Rakhine (Buddhists)," Win Myaing said. "Overpopulation is one of the causes of tension."

She added that authorities had not yet determined what method would be preferred for the application of this family policy, but stressed that it would be mandatory in the villages of Buthidaung and Maundaw. However, the measure will not be established in other parts of Rakhine state, as the Muslim population is smaller.
